    Carnival

Carnival is the most popular holiday in Greece. All people wear funny, scary or crazy masks, go out in the street and join a parade of colourfustophl floats. In Greece, Carnival is amazing! We go to parties and have fun! We dress up in lots of costumes: princess, fairy, witch, superheroes, ballerina, Star Wars, policemen and more! Also, we dance a lot and sing different songs. At parties, we eat pop corn and chips and play jokes on each other. We fly kites. At school, we steal streamers from other students! There are a lot of masqueraders in the streets. There are lots of carnival games, too!

The most famous Greek carnival parade takes place in Patra. People on colourful costumes dance and sing, wearing different costumes like ghosts, superheroes or pirates. It is celebrated on the last Sunday of the carnival.

In Metaxourgeio area, Athens, a big carnival was organised. People were dressed up as unicorns and they played the drums.

After the Carnival, on Clean Monday, most people fasten and they don’t eat meat, eggs or milk. On that day, we fly kites and have a great time!

In Greece, there are a lot of carnival customs. One of them is  called “alevromountzouroma” (“flour-stains”) in Galaxidi area: people go out in the streets and they fight, using flour in many different colours.
