    Introduction to Nurmeksen lukio

The upper secondary school of Nurmes is located in Eastern Finland, North-Karelia. Our school is little and really communal, we have about 100 students and about 20 teachers here. In the same building we have also vocational school and we can do dual qualification, so we can complete upper secondary school and vocational school studies at the same time. Our school has a long history: it is almost 120 years old.

In our school, we can study many subjects from science to PE. Our school offers also many project courses, for example a course of hiking in Lapland and a course where we collect money for a school camp. We havea  couple of obligatory courses in every subject and the rest we can choose by ourselves. The school takes from 3 to 4 years and it ends in final exams. In the final exams we have to take a test in 4 obligatory subjects: mother tongue, English, mathematics, Swedish, humanities or natural sciences. The rest of subjects are optional.

We have free school lunch and two cafés. In breaks we spend time in our school library and other common rooms. Here everybody knows each other and we are close with teachers, we can talk with them whenever we want. Also we call our teachers by their first names. Our school time's highlights are our traditions: prom dances, seniors' last day of school and taking new students into our community.

The atmosphere in our school is warm and positive. Here it is nice to study and be.
