On Tuesday 22nd of May we celebrated the first "Erasmus project day" activities at the the Santiago school. During this first day, more than 300 primary and secondary school students participated, cooperating with more than 15 teachers.
It was a beautiful cross-discipline and cooperative work experience, so that we would like to explain you a little about what we have done.
- EUROTUR: on the one hand, our sixth grade students showed to the secondary school students a little of the nice project they had developed during this academic year. Including different perspectives (Geography, Arts, political systems, the national symbols, typical recipes, the environment...) and three languages (Spanish, Galician and English), our sixth graders studied a total of 18 European countries.
Every country was explained at one stall of our Eurotour fair which was visited by hundreds of students, coordinated by our Erasmus group students.
It was a great pleasure to enjoy the sixth graders' knowledge and ability to show some points of their interesting project. Learning, for instance, about the Irish food or the Swedish heritage was a great experience for all our Secondary school students.
- The Ellis island: on the other hand, the Erasmus group students taught a lesson about the great migrations from Europe to US during the last decades of the XIXth century and the first years of the XXth century. Focusing their attention on the Immigration Center situated on Ellis Island they explained the process of travelling from Europe to the United States (the migrations causes, the life during the passage, the arrival at Ellis Island...). It was interesting to discover that "we all are migrants".
On Friday, 1st of June, our Erasmus group received their families at school to share with them an unforgetable experience: make them get into a European immigrant's shoes who travelled to America escaping from hunger. unemployment and looking for the American dream. The Erasmus students explained to their families the way they had to do as a European inmigrant of the late XIXth century, arriving at Ellis Island, the big Inmigration Center in the New York bay.
Firstly, let them know the hardness of the trip in the steamboats which went across the Atlantic ocean, then the great emotion seeing the Statue of Liberty, the fear to pass every step they must beat to get the entrance in the US (legal inspection, medical control,...), and the absolut happiness in the Kissing Post... Our "inmigrants" have learnt and enjoyed a lot because of the great performance their children did.
After the activity, families and Erasmus team shared some snacks and drinks in our school dinning room.
What a beautiful day!
