When, at the age of imperialism, European powers started to rule over large parts of the world, Europeans (and other colonial powers) justified their expansion by citing their alleged superiority and their mission to "civilize" the people living in less developed parts of the world. This attitude towards non-whites was not only reflected in Kipling's infamous poem "The Whiite Man's Burden", but also showed in many paintings, cartoons and even ads. With the help of materialis provided here, which were tested with 8th graders at a German grammar school, students can learn how to decipher the message of such representations and explain their findings in English before making their own drawing to express their view on the topic.
