Zero waste - eco campaign

  • "A zero waste vision can and should be applied to most current societal challenges – be it climate, businesses, cities, our own lifestyle." – Joan Marc Simon, Executive Director at Zero Waste Europe

ZERO WASTE is not just a slogan. It can help our planet! You can’t believe it? Have a look at the reason below.

    Zero waste helps our climate.

To reduce our greenhouse gas emissions we should reduce, reuse and recycle rubbish.

The U.S. EPA has estimated that 42% of all greenhouse gas emissions are caused by the production and use of goods ( for example food, products and packaging). If we needed less the gas emissions would be lower.

Zero waste helps to preserve resources and diminish pollution.

Consumptionism is unsustainable. When we extract raw materials for example by drilling for oil or mining for coal we need large amounts of energy. When we process the materials we need even more energy. Zero waste is aimed at conserving natural resources and reducing pollution from extraction, manufacturing and disposal. Reducing and reusing means that we need fewer products and we buy less.  Thanks to recycling we keep less waste in landfills and incinerators and we can use recycled instead of raw materials to make new products.

Zero waste helps your local communities

A zero waste approach protects community health because it reduces air, water and soil pollution.

Zero waste helps your local economy and creates jobs

It is estimated that reducing and reusing materials create more jobs for example renting tools, sharing a car. If you support local bussiness the money stays within your local community.

You can start with small steps. Don’t buy new things if you don’t need them. Buy locally made products. And above all don’t throw away too many things. If you want to put something in the rubbish bin, think first. Can’t you use it again? Won’t it be useful?

Our students wanted to start with such small steps. Thanks to Planet for Generation Foundation we learnt about zero waste and ways of reducing, recycling and reusing. Mr Marcin Kiełt conducted a workshop for our students. But it was just the beginning. Our students felt so inspired that they wanted more so they created amazing things out of rubbish. Watch the videos and browse through the album. Next time you want to throw something away, think again! It’s not garbage.
