LOCAL CHARACTERISTICS - LANGUAGE, ODRA, CROATIA

    Looking for Germanisms

We asked our grandparents, our mothers and fathers. We searched books for them. That is how we found the most common Germanisms that are used in our region.

Now Europe was awaiting us to explain their meaning. (And believe me…this was hardly a simple task…)

Is there really a way to explain the meaning of these words? Naturally, I know what hozentregeri are, but how can I explain this to the world???

We worked in pairs, in groups, we worked individually…and what do you get when many hands make light work? Lovely descriptions of more than 70 German words used in our local language. (8th grade pupils)

Although there may have been some hard times …the message was sent…we were not lost in translation.

Our Art teacher, Ms. Tamara, kept repeating that we had to let our drawings grow. But, how to represent and explain words like krautcvekle, nachtkastl? We had to convey the mood, not just the meaning.

Does she look satisfied, or are we wrong? She calls them little masterpieces while she is leafing through them…

Everyone is looking for their work and talking about it. Or is a picture worth a thousand words? (7th grade pupils)

Estella and her filc. (6th grade pupil)

Lucija and her vekerica. Tihana and her štof. (7th grade pupils)

Laura and her letva. Magdalena and her štepštih. (7th grade pupils)

And in the end, our winner of the day, Ema and some of her drawings. Here are only beštek and cuker. (6th grade pupil)

Thank you children, a picture is really worth a thousand words!

One group picture, another group picture. (6th grade pupils)

    WEDDING

Wedding is a familiar custom in our homeland Turopolje. There are many customs associated with the wedding: a girl's appointment, a bridal gear, the arrival of a bride in a new home. Weddings were usually held in winter. They are usually lasts three days. Several couples were often married at one time.

    CHRISTMAS

A few days before Christmas women were preparing food. Men brought wood to the heating house. The day before Christmas, the wine sprang up. The decorations were made of glossy paper, walnut, red apple. He then followed the tradition of "putting Christmas in the house." The older man and the children would go to the stall by slag. I would bring the straw in the house and say good wishes for the new year. Part of straw would be placed on the table and the part under the table. The family sang Christmas songs. In the evening they went to the church.

Pupils from Elementary School Odra and folk ensemble Mladost show the Christmas custom in Zagreb.
