Humenné - our town

  • The town Humenné is located in the north-east part of Eastern Slovakia, in the valley of the Laborec River. Some of the highest peaks are: the mount of Sokol, Petočová and Barančov. Humenné is surrounded with a beautiful natural environment.

The central landmark of the town’s walking-zone is a lid-up musical fountain situated right in the middle of the square. Next to the fountain, there is a performance stage for public culture events. North part of the square is remarkable by its night-lid water-covered area symbolically named the “Stream of time”, where you can see the bust of Slovakia’s famous politician, diplomat, and astronomer M. R. Štefánik. The square is the place where people can visit the traditional fair with the demonstrations of traditional folk crafts. The fair takes place three times a year – in summer, winter and “Days of the town Humenné” which is the special event for our town in September.

Humenné is a small town, but it has some very important landmarks to see. The Lutheran Church was built in the 90s of the 19th century in a Neo-Gothic style. Greek Orthodox Cathedral is a baroque-classicistic walled building from the year of 1767. The church on Calvary was built in a neo-classicist style in the year of 1891.

The historical jewel of Humenné is a Renaissance manor house. At present the manor house is home to the Vihorlatské Museum. The open-air museum of folk architecture is situated in the park near the manor house. The museum annually organizes programs and presentations of traditional folk crafts. These cultural activities on site of the open-air exposition already have a long-lived tradition and a wide circle of visitors. From the standpoint of the exposition program, this presentation of folklore architecture provides the visitor with a holistic picture of the character of folklore architecture of the region of upper Zemplín. Presented micro region is by every mean an integrated part of culture heritage and an expository display of the life of simple village people.

The Jewish cemetery in Humenné with its area and number of graves belongs to the oldest and the biggest cemetery in Slovakia. History of the cemetery is very interesting for the tourists that are coming every year to our town but also for family’s members from all over the world especially from Israel, USA, Canada, Australia.
