The waste of food in the canteen

One thing that bothers me in my school is the waste of food in the canteen. Every day a lot of food is thrown in the garbage when it could be avoided. The school could try to measure the amount of food that students eat and order it based on that. The school could also give the leftovers to people in need or to associations that help people instead of throwing it away.

    Waste of electricity

Certainly, one of the thing that shocks me the most about my school, is that we have a big garden and we don't use it.
Instead, we are always in our classroms to follow lessons, with computers on or interactive whiteboards that we forget to turn off. This leads to an unnecessary waste of electricity. We should start being outdoors more, whitout wasting electricity.

management of waist in my school

In my school the caps of bottles made of plastic are collected in some baskets all along the corridors. This way we can bring them from home and put them in to the appropriate counters. And an ecological operator comes every week to take away the baskets. This process has a purpose, to reduce the environmental impact and fabricate wheelchairs for people with disabilities.
    I think that's brilliant.

    Times of pandemic

In this pandemic season, many people have forgotten the planet and at school, many masks on the floor and much more rubbish! A lot of energy has always been wasted at my school, but in this pandemic winter, when it was necessary to air the rooms but also keep them warm, a lot of energy was wasted uselessly, with air conditioning on and windows open. Many teachers prefer to opt for the horrible white light in the rooms instead of raising the blinds and taking advantage of daylight, and for what? So many things that bother me, so many false moralists, who would rather play water fights than conserve it. So much food from the canteen that ends up in the rubbish! People who are hungry, especially now, and others cannot see any value in the cheap food they despise from the canteen, which would kill the hunger of many!

The Waste of Food in the Canteen

One of the things that upsets/shocks me the most in my school is the waste of food in the canteen. Many people leave almost the whole food in the plate and don't eat any of it. Therefore, the food that is not eaten goes to the trash. I think, as teenagers, we should try our best to reduce the food waste happening currently. It is true that we can't change it worldwide, but we can start by doing it in our community, for example, at home and at school. We should raise awareness for the consequences of food waste, and try our best to stop/reduce it.

    Lack of education

one of the things that upset me most at my school is the lack of education about our attitudes about the planet. Despite of the fact that there are lectures and some conversations on this topic, mostly in science classes, the time dedicated to education on topics such as pollution and the state of our planet, are insufficient and do not capture the attention of our students. Earth’s health is one of the most relevant topics to be addressed (since, as we know, it affects everything, from the production of our food to the quality of the air we breathe) and something of such importance and urgency should be addressed in a more realistic and direct way. The approach taken is very superficial, short and uninteresting which makes the students lose their attention and quickly forget about the information.

    Lack of education (continuation)

The generations that have the power to act and mobilize populations and that can have a real positive impact, are the generations that are currently being taught. In my opinion, teachers need to be more aware and raise awareness from the youngest to those who are already in the last year of learning. To improve our school, it’s necessary to have more lectures, more conversations, more shocking graphics and dissemination and analysis of real studies, and above all, dynamization of practical activities that reach more the conscience of each student! Food waste and lack of understanding of the problem

In my opinion, the school wastes a lot of food. In the canteen, we are often not allowed to repeat the dish and at the end of the day, the remains of the food go to waste. On the contrary, many students also ask for too much food and end up not eating everything.
Regarding electricity, I don't think it is wasted, since, unfortunately, neither the health crisis nor the organization of the education system allows most classes not to consist of learning from interactive whiteboards.
Finally, I also believe that environmental problems are not adequately addressed in schools. A greater effort must be made than that which is already done to make students understand the magnitude of these problems and to worry about them! More activities (which do not consist only of lectures) should be made in relation to these issues and should be more addressed in the classes!

    waste of electricity and food

Every holiday, as i pass in front of the school, i notice the lights in some areas of the school are kept on, however there is no purpose to this as no one is using the school or needs the lighting. This is one example for the waste of energy we can encounter.
Another one is that in summer, once the temperatures increase, the fans are used becuase our system of ventilation in the school is malfunctionning. These are plugged in the whole day in every classroom an used in excess, using a lot of electricity and only helping temporarily as it does not actually cool down the rooms.
Like many have mentioned above, the food waste in the canteens are shocking. Students are served the same portion and many leave aside what they don't like, or what is too much for their personal likings, and then throw it away.

Saturated bins and rubbish on the floor:

What upsets us most about our school, referring to this topic, is the amount of rubbish and plastics that are accumulated in our bins and on the floor. It may seem that in a high school it’s not something important. However, the number of plastics we consume every day is being one cause of the growing pollution of the environment. A good way to solve this global problem could be to improve it, first, in schools. For this it’s necessary that students are informed and aware about this topic, because it’s something that will affect future generations. This fact will condition their life by the importance that is gaining.

    The waste separation

In our school (Ecole européenne Strasbourg) the waste separation isn't working very well. For example in our foyer (the place we eat at) after the lunch rush hour, the trash lies around pretty much everywhere or the plastic is in the bin that is supposed to be for paper, etc.

One way of avoiding this issue could be to buy more trash cans to avoid them being full. We also need to sensibilise students and put up posters on how to separate waste the right way.

Another way to encourage correct waste separation could be to show students how their waste is recycled so that the efforts we do for our environment are made visible.

    Recycling and Creativity

When the recycling program started, our class was given just one bin so we couldn’t separate plastic from paper. After useless claims we decided to make our own can but the problem of recycling is that it can be effective only if everyone collaborates because a single piece of paper in the wrong bin could damage the whole process. Therefore when operators saw that trash wasn’t separated properly they put the waste in undifferentiated bins. So we were extra careful and one person per day would check the bins to make sure our efforts weren’t vain. The program could have been organized better: we needed more trash cans, a list of what could be put in each one and what could not be differentiated, but above all it seemed too plain compared to the recycling challenge in art class where we had to create Christmas decoration form waste.
