I believe that humanity should not make the mistake of ignoring the first signs of fascism again. Society as a whole must isolate these ideas and try to eradicate prejudices from children, which over time can be cultivated and evolve into socially racist perceptions. In this way, monstrous acts and events that took place in the past, such as the Holocaust, the Genocide of Romani people and Armenians, but also any persecution against social groups based on their racial or religious characteristics, will never happen again.

A major mistake that humanity has made in the past and it continues repeating until now is the persecutions against groups of people that have different opinions on political, racial, national, cultural and religious issues. An important mistake that humanity should not repeat is the Chernobyl nuclear accident. This took place on April 26th 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the Soviet Union. The accident was severely disrupted economic and social conditions. Furthermore, it had a significant impact on the environment and health. It is estimated that the health of hundreds of thousands of people was affected. The increase in cancer was more than 15% in the population. The damage caused in Chernobyl had catastrophic consequences for the rest of Europe. This accident could have been avoided if people had not misused scientific inventions just for monetary profits.

In 1978, the Soviet Union killed the then president of Afganistan Sardar Mohammad Daud Khan in a coup d'etat. A year later on Dec 25, 1979, it sent its 40th Army to fight in Afganistan.The official invasion of Afganistan had begun and the Cold War started to gain fuel. What followed was a bloody war that resulted in the loss of more than 2 million Afghan civilians with many more fleeing the country. This -among others-is an example of the devastating effects of an invasion that should never again exist in human history.

During this whole pandemic, one might often feel like the dog on the top right corner of the picture, loitering alone in the cold and sometimes one might even consider jumping off that bridge. My wish for this Christmas is for all of us to manage to stay positive and somewhat festive in the face of such rough circumstances.
As for the past mistake to avoid: don’t let religion have control over the state. We've seen how oppression and "holy" wars can come as a result of such a mistake. Atrocities during the Crusades and other similar campaigns are a fact and so is the violation of human rights in the name of godsend religious laws. We should liberate our societies of such backward influences and progress with the help of all the knowledge we've acquired along the way.

I hope that no nation will experience situations like the one caused in Greece during the World War II. In this period, one of the most dramatic of modern Greek history, known as "Occupation", a large number of civilians died of starvation, but also gradually stepped up the National Resistance against occupation forces. Eventually in October 1944, as the defeat of the Axis was now apparent, the retreat of the German troops led to liberation. Next year I wish all people to live without fear, oppression and the need of fighting for their freedom.
