Escola Básica dos 2º e 3º Ciclos do Caniço

  • Escola Básica dos 2º e 3º Ciclos do Caniço is located at Rua João Baptista de Sá, in the town of Caniço, municipality of Santa Cruz, in the island of Madeira. The city of Caniço is placed towards the city of Funchal, at about 8 km, and it is at only 11 km from Santa Cruz, where the main airport of the island is. The community where the school is inserted encompasses a socially diverse population with both rural and suburban characteristics. The school population, as well as the town’s population, has been increasing gradually over several school years in a systematic way. In 1999/2000 there were 18 classes, 406 students, 29 staff and 42 teachers. In most recent school years the school started its academic year with 1172 students, distributed by 48 classes in day teaching and 8 classes in night teaching (adults), 145 teachers and 61 non-teaching staff members. The facilities have also been expanded to meet the continued demand of the community. Thus, in 2002 the school building underwent some interventions: a music room was created and, in 2004, a Pavilion was built which includes press rooms, a weight room, a table tennis room and, in the basement, two workshops and 58 covered parking spaces. In 2005, a new building was constructed and the social areas of the students were restructured, namely the library, canteen and the students’ bar. The school operates on a daytime basis between 8:05 min. and 18:25 and at night between 19:30 and 23:10. We are a school that values integral, interdisciplinary and transversal education, privileging a set of humanistic values essential to the world in which we live: responsibility, free initiative, creativity, entrepreneurship, community, autonomy and solidarity. We privilege not only our students to acquire a set of essential knowledge in science and technology, humanities and languages, but also in the arts: theatre, music, dance, poetry, plastic arts, which play an important social role in our next generation. At this moment, the school revitalizes a project called "Cultural School" that involves 14 teachers and more than a hundred students in different artistic areas and that goes through the best objectives: - Creation of an outdoor auditorium (summer 2018) - Development of artistic nuclei that allow the presentation of experiences and development of skills in the area of creativity, entrepreneurship and arts. The school develops many activities in the field of robotics, chess, environmental education, mathematics, chemistry and social volunteering. We are one of the three schools in Madeira that belong to UNESCO. (Rede UNESCO) This project is fundamental to our school, in particular for the "Cultural School" project, because it will allow students and teachers to share with other European schools the opportunity to exchange cultural knowledge and skills so that our students can become more creative, more dynamic and able to be entrepreneurs and consequently more active and responsible citizens.
