Harbours' social life

  • Harbours were always connected with people and their life.

Either they were met there as simple people doing their work, like fishermen, traders, sailors or like visitors who met at the harbours like tourists, migrants....

Europeana's photos and our familiar gallery: Trawlers, harbours and fishing communities will help us at this chapter as well.

In this chapter we will work again in transnational teams, but this time in different groups focusing on harbours social life.

Dear students, visit Europeana's platform by clicking on the images below,

and try to answer to the following questions adding an item to the twinboard:

-What do you see in these photos?

-What is the year that it refers?

    -Who is the owner?

-What kind of information give us?

-How it is connected with our harbours' social life?

-Can you compare your harbours' ships or social life and find differences and similarities?

This photo was taken between 1836-1838. You can see one landing place in a small harbour at Rhodes. Rhodes is an aegean island in Dodecanese in Greece. You can see the architecture in the city, the castles and the built environment. You can also see traders and visitors with small boats. Nowdays the harbours and the ships are bigger and the architecture of buildings is very different. The similarity is that nowdays also have trade activities in the harbours.
