Harbours' Lighthouses

  • We can not talk about harbours if we don't mention their lighthouses. Each harbour's history is connected with a lighthouse, built years ago playing an important role for people and ships, giving its light, standing there as a significant meeting point!

Europeana's photos and our familiar gallery: Trawlers, harbours and fishing communities will help us again.

In this chapter we will work in transnational teams, according to students interests, focusing on lighthouses history.

Dear students, visit Europeana's platform by clicking on the image below,

pick up a lighthouse and try to answer to the following questions adding an item to the twinboard:

-What do you see in this photo?

-What is the year that it refers?

    -Who is the owner?

-What kind of information gives us?

-How it is connected with our city’s lighthouse

-Can you compare your city's lighthouse with the one of the photo and find differences and similarities?

"The eruption of a volcano on the coast at night lights up a lighthouse and boats in the other side of the bay.
    Early 19th century"
As the title says I can see a lighthouse which is standing there, just in front the eruption of a volcano.
We don't have a volcano in our city, but this painting reminds me stormy nights at our harbour.

Kõpu lighthouse is the symbol of Hiiumaa. Is the oldest lighthouse remaining in the Baltics. In 1989-90, the tower was enclosed in reinforced concrete due to danger of falling debris. The lighthouse continues to be classified as an active aid to navigation, although it has lost its role as the primary lighthouse after a radar lighthouse took over in 1997.

This lighthouse with a grey body and a red dome, measuring 40 metres in height, was built in 1876. The pieces necessary to construct the metal tower were ordered all the way from Le Havre in France. The lighthouse started work in 1877. German fire destroyed the lantern room during World War I. A temporary service space with a lantern on top was re-installed by 1921. Full renovations were conducted according to a project by engineer Ants Niilre in 1936-1937. The lighthouse consists of a cylindrical pipe supported from the sides by slanted pipes. The central pipe houses a spiral staircase. The service space is located in a wider steel cylinder that supports the lantern room.
