    Evaluation of third Staff meeting

The third Staff meeting was completed successfully at 2nd Geniko Lykeio Aliveriou, Greece 26-28 September 2018. Nine partners were hosted in Aliveri, the same three persons of each partner country. They had morning and afternoon meetings at the school for three days with intermediate breaks for lunch and dinner at the outskirts of Aliveri. After a guided tour to the school they watched a presentation of Entrepreneurship in Aliveri and they were introduced to the eTwinning TwinSpace platform. They practiced on the TwinSpace uploading documents and photos and practiced with web 2.0 tools. We decided all participants of the Second short-term exchange to Hoogeveen to present themselves on the padlet https://padlet.com/seagullitsa/b10c2tvbybfq. We also made some changes on the display of the official website of the project. The Dutch and Italian partners presented the programs of the short-term exchanges of groups of pupils in Hoogeveen, Netherlands in November 2018 and in Orte, Italy in April 2019 respectively. During the breaks partners had a pleasant and instructive conversation with the Greek students, where they praised them for the good use of English Language. Under the Project, partners visited a local family business, the microbrewery of Septem in Orologio and the city of Kymi, the metropolis of the oldest Greek colonies in Southern Italy, the birthplace of G. Papanicolaou (Test Pap), and the area that produces exclusively the figs of Kymi, unique and recognized as a product with PDO. In the end partners evaluated the meeting using the Google Forms https://goo.gl/forms/a7K5Aa6E8tepvbRG2. Partners enjoyed the landscape of the municipality of Kymis-Aliveriou despite the bad weather that was affecting Greece at that time.

Evaluation of the Second Short-term exchange of groups of pupils

The Second short-term exchange of groups of pupils took place at the RSG Wolfsbos in Hoogeveen, The Netherlands 05-11 November 2018. Twenty four students from the three partner countries were hosted by Dutch families for a week. From Italy participated ten students and two teachers, from Spain eight students and two teachers and from Greece six students and two teachers. For some students was the first transnational exchange and they were excited associating with their European partners. Before the mobility they had met through social media and TwinSpace. They experienced the warm hospitality of the Dutch families, the family rulesand the daily life. Some families hosted one student of each partner country and a friendly atmosphere developed very fast among them. They enjoyed eco transportation to school, as they were coming by bicycles. They were impressed by the well-equipped school. The organization of the Dutch colleagues was exemplary and the activities were very interesting. Students and teachers followed lessons in different classes. In mixed teams students discovered the city's attractions through recreational activities and were guided to a windmill. There was a daily evaluation of the activities. They collaborated in mixed groups to find an innovative, environmentally friendly business idea. They practiced English Language and developed digital skills and skills of life. The program of each day ended with an interesting trip to the surroundings. We also visited the Nemo Museum in Amsterdam and met the canals of the city by cruising along the Amstel River. Particularly interesting and pleasant for the teachers was the dinner with a Dutch family and the dinner at Ymie’s house where partners prepared dishes of their country. The last evening we all enjoyed the farewell dinner, organized by the families, in the cozy classroom of the school. During our saying an article about our meeting was published on the local press. It was an unforgettable experience for our students because apart fromimproving their entrepreneurial and digital skills they developed strong friendship bonds with their partners.

In parallel we have been working on the projects “Trip to my region” in Greek

The purpose of the project is:

To make students aware of the 17 goals set by the United Nations and put forward as the global goals for sustainable development by 2030 and to analyze the 11th goal "Sustainable Cities and Communities" objective. Through the Research Work, students will have the opportunity to get to know their region, to search and present the advantages of their area and to make suggestions for improvement to enhance the tourist interest in their region.

    Research questions:

    • What is the economic activity of the inhabitants of your area?

How would you present your place to a tourist?

    • Which places of interest and what activities would you suggest?
    • Which areas, based on traditional culture, cover your area?
    • What negative spots do you find in your area?
    • What would you do to attract tourists to your area?
    • Who would benefit from increasing tourism in your area?
    • Which tourism business would you choose to take care of and why?

    Expected results:

    • Students will create a brochure on local tourist issues.
    • Each group will create a three-pronged spots in their place that they consider important for attracting tourists.
    • They will develop business skills by creating scenarios of a virtual tourist business.
    • They will present the results of their research and their suggestions at the school community.

Evaluation of the Third Short-term exchange of groups of pupils

The Third short-term exchange of groups of pupils took place at the Istituto Omnicomprensivo in Orte, Italy 08-14 April 2019. Twenty four students from the three partner countries were hosted by Italian families for a week. From the 2nd GEL Aliveriou participated eight students (Zacharoula Kelli and Rusalina Latypova from A Class and Panagiotis Glaros, Konstantina Kollia, Andreas Lalanitis, Florjan Mahilaj, Mekeliana Bica and Chondrogiannis Antonios from B Class) and two teachers (Litsa Glarou and Anastasia Elafrou). On Monday morning, before meeting with the families in Orte, our students were guided to Rome; to the Colosseum, the Imperial Markets, Piazza Venezia, Piazza Navona, Pantheon, Fontana di Trevi and Piazza Di Spagna.

All students were excited meeting their European partners. Six of them had the pleasure to meet again their partners that they had met in the Netherlands last November. Before the exchange they had communicated with the Italians through social media. They experienced the warm hospitality of the Italian families, the family rules and their daily life. Particularly interesting and pleasant for the teachers was the dinner with an Italian family. The Italian colleagues organised an excellent meeting and very interesting activities inside and outside the school. Students collaborated in mixed teams and created a digital tourist brochure for different ages for a tourist site in Latium, practicing English Language and developing digital skills. In the end, they evaluated their participation through a questionnaire and presented the results of their work to the Italian families. The program of each day ended with an interesting trip to the sights and natural landscapes of Latium and Umbria. Because of the rainy weather on Wednesday the Italian partners changed the afternoon program of Tuesday with Wednesday’s.

On Tuesday afternoon students had trekking activities with guides of 8km to admire the Etruscan Pyramid of the 7th or 6th BC. which was discovered in the 1990s by two local archaeologists and the Tower of Chia or Tower of Pazolini where the famous actor, poet, writer, screenwriter and director wrote his works and lived in the last years of his life. He discovered the place during the filming of "The Gospel according to Matthew".

On Wednesday afternoon they were guided to the underground aqueduct of the old town of Orte and the narrow alleys overlooking the Tiber River and enjoyed a performance by locals in medieval costumes on the central square of the town.

On Thursday afternoon they visited the beautiful Florence in Tuscany with the buildings and monuments of imposing architecture that brought them to another era, grandeur, wealth and abundant art. The tour began at Santa Croce, built in 1294 in Gothic style, and hosts the tombs of many well-known Florentine children, such as Galileo, Machiavelli, Michael Angelus, Lorenzo Gilberti and Leonardo Bruni. Impressed by the dimensions of Santa Maria del Fiore with the huge dome of Brunejske, which dominates the historic center and is the famous cathedral of the city. They admired the famous Gates of Paradise of the Baptistery, made of gold, depicting scenes from the Old Testament by Lorenzo Guerrero. They saw Palaccio Vecchio and admired the great David of Michael Angelus, who depicts the biblical hero who killed Goliath. They walked to the bustling Ponte Vecchia, which is the oldest bridge of the city, dating back to 1345. The day was closed with a tour at the Uffizi Gallery, the first gallery in the world created by the architect Vazari in the late 16th century, where they admired the masterpieces of Botticelli, Spring and Aphrodite, as well as paintings by other Renaissance artists.

On Friday afternoon 7.7 kilometers away in Terni, the provincial capital of the Italian region of Umbria, they visited the natural landscape of Cascata delle Marmore, the tallest man-made waterfall in the world created by the ancient Romans. Its total height is 165 meters.

The tour ended on Saturday morning at the "terrifying" Parco dei Mostri in Bomarzo, commissioned in 1552 by Prince Francesco Orsini, as an expression of sadness and designed to shock. This park inspired Salvador Dali of "The Temptation of Saint Anthony".

On Saturday evening we all enjoyed the farewell dinner, organized by the families, at the school. It was an unforgettable experience for our students because apart from improving their entrepreneurial and digital skills they developed strong friendship bonds with their partners. All activities were in line with our plans. Participants 30 in total: 10 Greek (2 teachers & 8 students), 10 Dutch (2 teachers & 8 students) and 10 Spanish (2 teachers & 8 students)

    Tuesday/Orte historical centre

Orte is a town, comune (municipality), former Catholic bishopric and Latin titular see in the province of Viterbo, in the central Italian region Latium Lazio, located about 60 kilometres (37 mi) north of Rome and about 24 kilometres (15 mi) east of Viterbo. It is situated in the Tiber valley on a high tuff cliff, encircled to North and East from a handle of the Tevere river. It is an important road and rail hub.\

    The aqueduct of Orte

Santa Maria Assunta is the main Roman Catholic church of Orte, located in front of the Piazza della Liberta of the town, in the province of Viterbo, region of Lazio, Italy. It is one of three co-cathedrals of the diocese of Civita Castellana, which since 1991 encompases the former territories of the dioceses of Orte, GalleseNepi, and Sutri, each of which has a co-cathedral church.

Wednesday/Pier Paolo Pasolini tower also named The tower of Chia

Pier Paolo Pasolini tower or The tower of Chia, was once the writing studio of Pier Paolo Pasolini. In 1964, the writer and director was shooting his most famous film «The Gospel according to Matthew» when he saw this medieval tower, and he fell in love with it, bought it in 1970 and restored it. It was Pasolini’s last home, where he was writing the unfinished novel ‘Oil» before being killed in 1975.

The lonely silhouette of the Tower of Chia (Torre di Chia) rises above the scenic woods and waterfalls of Fosso Castello in the province of Viterbo, the land of the ancient Etruscans. It is here that the Italian director, poet, and writer Pier Paolo Pasolini spent the final years of his life, and filmed the key scenes of his most famous film, “The Gospel According to Matthew.”

You can’t enter the tower (it’s private property), but you can walk around its walls while you look for the cache. The nearby woods are nice, too.

    The Etruscan pyramid

In 2008, a local resident named Salvatore Fosci rediscovered a monumental Etruscan pyramid-shaped altar, just a short distance from the famous Parco dei Mostri (Park of Monsters) in Bomarzo.

The enormous peperino rock was hidden by vegetation on the slopes of a deep canyon and was only discovered for the first time in the 1990s, by two local archaeologists.

The pyramid is believed to be an altar dating back to the 7th or 6th centuries BC, used by the Etruscan haruspices, soothsayers who practiced divination by inspecting the entrails of sacrificed animals. This art of divination was a key element of the Etrusca Disciplina(Etruscan religious scriptures), which had a significant influence on Roman culture.

The altar is positioned toward the northwest, facing the direction of the Etruscan underworld gods (Di inferi). In the heyday of the Etruscan civilization, it must have represented a very important sacred site, though very little is known about it.

Steps and gutters (possibly to facilitate the flow of blood of sacrificed animals) were carved in the altar, which is also known by the name of Sasso del Predicatore (The Preacher’s Stone). The steps are steep and holes carved along either side of the steps and on the intermediate levels may have once supported wooden posts and supports.

The area surrounding the pyramid is a treasure trove of Etruscan inscriptions, tombs, medieval ruins, and a mysterious tower associated with the Italian writer and director Pier Paolo Pasolini. Hiking trails connect all of the sites within a four-hour hike.

    Friday/Marmore falls

The amazing Marmore falls are just 8 kilometers from Terni and can be reached by either of the two roads east of the city, one leading to the upper road, or “Superiore”, and the other that takes you to the lower road, or “Inferiore”. Cascata dell Marmore is in fact a man made water fall and at 541 feet is the highest in all of Europe. The falls were created by the Romans in 271 BC when they diverted the River Velino into the Nera to prevent flooding of local agricultural land. Further work was done when channels were dug in 1400 and 1785 with the intention of draining Riet’s plain without causing floods in Terni. The final step that created the spectacle as we know it today came about when Lago Piediluco was dammed in the 1930′s which allowed their use for hydroelectric power. The hydroelectric plant at the Marmore Falls is in fact the largest in all of Italy.

Saturday/The Monsters, also named Garden of Bomarzo

A 16th-century horror show built in a lovely Italian garden.

Τhe Park of the Monsters, or “Parco dei Mostri,” in the Garden of Bomarzo was not meant to be pretty. Commissioned in 1552 by Prince Pier Francesco Orsini, it was an expression of grief designed to shock.

The Prince, also known as Vicino, had just been through a brutal war, had his friend killed, been held for ransom for years, and come home only to have his beloved wife die. Racked with grief, the Prince wanted to create a shocking “Villa of Wonders” and hired architect Pirro Ligorio to help him do so. Ligorio was a widely respected architect and artist and had previously completed the Cathedral of Saint Peter in Rome after the death of Michelangelo, as well as the Villa d’ Este in Tivoli. This was to be an unusual, but interesting job for him.
The park is filled with bizarre and fascinating sculptures for which only the accompanying inscriptions provide any explanation. Among the pieces are a war elephant, a monstrous fish-head, a giant tearing another giant in half, and a house built on a tilt to disorient the viewer. Perhaps the most frightening piece in the garden is an enormous head, mouth opened wide in a scream. The accompanying inscription reads “all reason departs.”
Built during the Italian Renaissance, the garden layout bore little resemblance to the symmetry of other Renaissance gardens, and the art was made in a rough “Mannerist” style, a sort of 16th-century version of Surrealism. It makes sense, then, that the Surrealists loved it.
Salvador Dalí visited the park and loved it. He was so inspired, he shot a short film there, and the sculptures inspired his 1946 painting The Temptation of Saint Anthony. Jean Cocteau was also a fan of the park. Other artists followed, and a novel, libretto, and opera have all been based on the park.
While there is no way of truly knowing how the Prince felt about the park, the final addition indicates that perhaps he was getting over his melancholy. Built 20 years after the park was begun, it is not a monster but a temple, built to honor his second wife.
When you visit the park, be sure to enter the giant screaming mouth (known as “the mouth of hell”), inside which, on the tongue, stands a picnic table and enough seating for a small group to have lunch.
