Josef Lada´s winter

JOSEF LADA and his pictures of winter

Josef Lada (1887 –1957) was a Czech painter and writer. He is best known as the illustrator of Jaroslav Hašek's World War One novel The Good Soldier Švejk.

Entirely self-taught, he created his own style as a caricaturist for newspapers, and later as an illustrator.  Over the years he created a series of paintings and drawings depicting traditional Czech occupations.

If you have friends in the Czech Republic and they send you Christmas greetings regularly, you might have received an idyllic post card depicting village children sledge-riding, skating or building a snowman. They are all dressed up in the style of the 1930s. When Czech people want to say that there is a lot of snow in the winter, they sometimes just say: "We have Lada´s winter." :-)

We have looked up some of his charming winter pictures and prepared a series of activities "Spot the mistake" for you. Enjoy!
