Team Ivanec 3 - Interview with archeologist

An interview with Ivančica Peharda, an archaeologist from Ivanec

How did you decide to become an archaeologist?

By chance! I wanted to study Art History or English, however, the fear of failure overcame, so I took the entrance exam for Archaeology and I did it.

Where were you conducting the digs?

In Crno Vrilo, near Zadar, Škornica, near Privlaka, Ivanec Old City, Krapina Old City, Belica, Štrigova, Sveti Martin na Muri, Drenovac by Varaždinske Toplice, Novi Marof.

Which of the items you found, were the most interesting and the most valuable?

A hair garland, decorated with pearls and tiny crystals (Sveti Martin na Muri), the coins are also valuable, mostly because of their age.

    Do you love your job?

Yes, I love it. Archaeology is love.

Where are all these items kept?

    In museum storeroom.

What was found at the archaeological site of Old City Ivanec?

Graves, over 400 of them, a lot of ceramic items (from the 9th to the 20th century), architecture, metal objects (nails, jewelry, coins…), tombstones, buildings…

    What tools do archaeologists use?

They use scrapers, brushes, dental tools, a foot rule, boards, chalks, pencils, notebooks.

What is the most interesting thing about being an archaeologist?

    Digging and studying graves.

How does an archaeologist have to look during the digs?

Comfort and layered clothing, flat-soled shoes.

What was the most dangerous thing that happened to you during the digs?

Coming across boars! At one of the archaeological sites, at the end of a village, a herd of wild boars ran past us, only 5 metres near.

Thank you for talking to us! Helena & Ema
