He was a Slovenian poet. He was one of the greatest representatives of the Romantic School in Slovenia, with passionate and sincere compositions. He wrote poems in his spare time. His first printed poetry appeared in 1827 in Slovenian and German versions. There is a statue of him in Ljubljana that is one of the best-known monumets in Slovenia. His most important work, Sonetni Venec was directly inspired by his unhappy love Julija Primic and with the death of his close friend, the poet Matija Čop.
