  • The Greek team researched international filmography  on migration and picked 10 movies that span into reporting several migration incidents. 

    1. The Immigrant 

    A 1917 American silent movie. It was written and directed by Charlie Chaplin. He also played the main character as an immigrant coming to the United States who is accused of theft on the voyage across the Atlantic Ocean, and falls in love with a beautiful young woman along the way...

    2. The Godfather part II  

    A 1974 American film produced and directed by Francis Ford Coppola, starring Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. The movie potrays the life of an Italian immigrant in New York who becomes the patriarch of an organized crime dynasty. 

     

     

    3. Ellis  

    A 2015 short film directed by JR and starring Robert De Niro. It evokes the early years of Ellis Island through the experience of one immigrant.

     

     

    4. Le Havre  

    A 2011 film produced, written, and directed by Aki Kaurismäki.  It tells the story of a shoeshiner who tries to save an immigrant child in the French port city Le Havre. 

     

     

    5. Persepolis  

    A 2007 adult animated film based upon the Marjane Satrapi autobiographical graphic novel. The story follows her life from her childhood focusing on how the the Iranian Revolution has changed her life and forced her family to migrate from Iran to Austria and then to France... 

    6. Gran Torino  

    A 2008 American drama film directed and produced by Clint Eastwood, who also starred in the film. The story follows a racist Korean War veteran living in a crime-ridden Detroit neighborhood who is forced to confront his own lingering prejudice when a troubled immigrant girl from his neighborhood attempts to steal his prized car a Gran Torino... 

     

     

    7. A touch of Spice  

    A 2003 Greek film directed by Tassos Boulmetis. The original Greek title is Πολιτικη Κουζίνα (Politiki Kouzina) which due to the lack of punctuation has two meanings. As Πολίτικη it means Cuisine of the City refering to the Cuisine of Constantinople. As Πολιτική it means Political Cuisine signifying the important role that politics played in the lives of the main characters.  The movie tells the story about a 35 year old Greek who recalls growing up in Istanbul and being deported to Athens due to the 1930 Greco-Turkish Ankara Convention. His memories focuses on his grandfather, a culinary philosopher and mentor...

     

     

    8. Entre Nos

    A 2009 drama film co-written and co-directed by Paola Mendoza and Gloria LaMorte. The film is a semi-autobiographical tale based on the arrival of Mendoza's own mother from Colombia to the United States. It explores her life as a newcomer immigrant while struggling to survive on the streets of New York City with her two children. 

     

     

    9. House of Sand and Fog  

    A 2003 American drama film directed by Vadim Perelman based on the novel of Andre Dubus.The story concerns the battle between a young woman and an immigrant Iranian family over the ownership of a house in Northern California. The "american dream" of the Iranian family ultimately goes terribly awry...

     

     

     

      10. For a moment, Freedom

      A 2008 film (original title: Ein Augenblick Freiheit ), written and directed by the Austrian-Iranian filmmaker Arash T. Riahi. It centers on the odyssey of three Iranians groups of refugees fleeing their homeland in search of freedom. It reports their struggle while in Turkey to apply for asylum and get European visas.
