LITTLE CHICKPEA
Once upon a time... a mum and a dad had such a little baby that they called him Little Chickpea. They made him a tiny bed with toothpicks. Time was passing and Little Chickpea was very clever but he didn’t grow.
He spent his time exploring the house:
- Little Chickpea, where are you? Her mum asked frequently
- I'm in the parsley pot
- Little Chickpea, where are you?
- I’m in your pocket, mum
- Upss! I didn’t realised
Little Chickpea wanted to help his parents. He went to the shop to buy saffron to make his mother’s delicious rice. Her mother gave him a coin and warned him that someone could step on him. Little Chickpea went out and started to sing loudly so everyone could hear him.
Cling! Clang! Clong!
Be careful whatyou do!
Cling! Clang! Clong!
Don’t step on Little Chickpea
People were surprised when they saw a walking coin that was singing.
When Little Chickpea came in the shop he shouted
- Miss Shop Assistant, please, can I have some saffron?
- Shop assistant: a talking coin! There is a boy under the coin
The shop assistant gave the saffron to Little Chickpea who came back home singing:
Cling! Clang! Clong!
Be careful what you do!
Cling! Clang! Clong!
Don’t step on Little Chickpea
Another day he wanted to help his father with his work in the fields and asked him for guiding the horse
- Lift up the horse’s head and I will speak in his ear – Little Chickpea said
- You are very small and the horse might step on you – warned his father
After finishing this task, Little Chickpea kept playing nearby. It started to rain and Little Chickpea took cover under a cabbage. A bull that was walking by noticed the cabbage was moving and ate the whole thing in one bite.
- Ugh, what a bad smell here! Little Chickpea said
His parents couldn’t find their son.
- Little Chickpea, where are you?
- Inside the bull’s belly where it isn’t raining and you can’t see me. It smells bad and it’s dirty and dark.
The bull was given a lot to eat until he did apoo. Little Chickpea flew off covered with straw, cabbage and poo. They washed Little Chickpea, they washed his clothes and they put perfume on him. They came back home, singing happily:
Cling! Clang! Clong!
Be careful what you do!
Cling! Clang! Clong!
Don’t step on Little Chickpea
...and they lived happily ever after!
SABELIÑA and the ENCHANTED MOURA
By Alejandra Noguerol from a folk tale
Once upon a time there was a mother and her daughter Sabeliña. They had a sheep.
The sheep produced a lot of milk for them to drink. But they had to graze it in the tasty meadows of the nearby mountain.
The mother used to feed the sheep and she knew that in the mountains there was a dangerous witch called Moura.
One day, the mother could not go to the mountain with the beloved sheep. She asked Sabeliña to go. But she warned her to be very careful with Moura and that she shouldn’t give any milk to Moura.
Sabeliña walked happily to the mountains with her sheep, but suddenly an old witch appeared!!!
- Good morning little girl, what are you doing alone on the mountains?
- I came here to these green mountains with my sheep, so it can graze and continue giving milk to us.
- And... What is your name?
- My name is Sabeliña.
- Could you, please, let me taste a little bit of milk from your sheep?
- Noooo! My mother told me not to give it to anybody. We have not got anything to eat, and the milk is our food!
- Please, give me a bit! Your mother is not going to notice anything.
- No, no! I cannot, really!! - Told Sabeliña to Moura.
- Look, if you give me a little, I will give you some gold coins...
After a lot of insistence, Sabeliña let Moura taste the milk, and, in return, Moura gave her three gold coins.
When Sabeliña came back home, she was excited in joy because she thought they were rich!!
The mother asked Sabeliña how she had got the three coins and she answered her she had found them.
The next day Sabeliña returned to the mountains and the same thing happened, but at the third day Moura took Sabeliña with her.
Night came and Sabeliña had not returned home. Her mother started to worry and decided to walk up the mountains.
All the way up she was shouting:
- Sabeliñaaaa, Sabeliñaaaaaa, were are you???
- Sabeliñaaaaaaaaaaaa
Suddenly she heard a voice:
- She has died and she is being cooked in my big cauldron.
And that was the story of Moura and Sabeliña.
