Spain - IES Laxeiro

  • IES Laxeiro is a Secondary School for students from the age of 12. The levels taught here encompass both Compulsory Secondary Education and Baccalaureate.

It is also a Vocational School centre and also a Secondary School for Adults. Students have the opportunity to prepare themselves for University entrance exams.

About six hundred students are taught here and the staff of teachers is 75.

The main aim of this school is to prepare students for the future, introducing them to different useful subjects for life, offering them ways that make them ready and fit for jobs and university, as well as their integration in society.

The school year starts in the middle of September and lasts until the end of June. Holidays are in December (Christmas) and in March – April (Easter); therefore, the year is also divided into these three ‘terms’, at the end of which students are provisionally marked. There are also other minor breaks in between these dates.

Most holidays have (or had) to do with religious festivals although people here are not especially religious now.

The school weeks starts on Monday and lasts up to Friday, with days starting at nine o’clock and ending at half past two. There are also lessons on Monday afternoon (from four o’clock until twenty to six). Wednesdays are for vocational studies as well. Obviously, adult students attend the night shift, which starts at ten to five and ends at half past ten in the evening.

We have six classes of fifty minutes with a twenty minute break every two classes.
