Handicraft is very important because represents our culture and tradition. It promotes the heritage of a country through the use of indigenous materials and it preserves traditional knowledge and talents. Handicraft is the expression of our history and I think we must encourage artisans to continue the craft production to show the beauty of this art.

Bulgarian Pottery

Like most ancient cultures, pottery is one of the oldest craft traditions in Bulgaria. Unsurprisingly, everyone needed vessels to cook and carry liquid in. The main center of ceramic production is the city of Troyan, and Troyan ceramics are considered the “true” Bulgarian pottery. 
The Troyan style began to evolve in the 19th century based on Thracian and Slavic designs. It is unique due to the red color of clay from the region and the design. Traditionally the pottery was painted, the colors are applied yellow, brown and green paint with a bull"s horns and feathers to achieve a peacock or butterfly like design or smeared paint with their fingertips to achieve a raindrop like effect.According to legend, the mandala designs are linked to the peacocks of the court of the Ottoman empire. 

Today craftsmen combine traditional designs with modern techniques and vibrant colors to produce fabulous pottery for everyday use or for home décor. In the past years Troyan pottery has appeared on the pages of magazines such as Vogue Magazine, Vogue Living, Bridal Guide, Gourmet Magazine, Elle Décor, Traditional Home, and Domino Magazine.
