TOPIC 1: ENVIRONMENT AND CLIMATE CHANGE

  • Is climate change an example of “The Metamorphosis of the World” which goes beyond traditional patterns like east/west, rich/poor…?

The climate change is one of the main causes of “the metamorphosis of the world”, which means an extreme transformation of the traditional patterns of international relation between countries. These traditional patterns are being replaced by new concepts, for instance, the new growing structure of markets brought about by the real locations of the emerging new raw materials.

Is graphene the new future material?

The graphene is one of these new materials which can become all or nothing. It has a better electric conductivity than copper, it’s more tough than steel and it’s very flexible. Some of its uses in the future would be charging a phone in less time and getting better quality on the sound of headphones. The issue of the graphene is that it is still nowadays an unknown material and not many factories can produce big amounts of it. In the location of Murcia, in Spain, there is one of the main graphene producer factories in the world. The factory business owner explains that they have put into practice a system which allows to manufacture industrial quantities of this new material, something that currently no one in the world can do.

    Melting global consequences

In the future, islands like the island of Kiribati (in the northeast of Australia) will not be able to have people living in it. This is because of the melting of the Arctic and Antarctica. Scientists say this century the sea level is going to grow around a metre (something unavoidable). This melting is allowing new routes of sailing, which also causes the pollution of the water.

Another example related to this incident takes place in Canada, where a melting glacier has caused an entire river to vanish, something worrying that hasn't happened for thousands of years.

Is it possible a society without petrol engine cars?

Yes, we all agree that it is possible a society without petrol engine cars. There are many different ways to replace the petrol cars. Up to the present, in the world there are about 665.000 electric cars, but increasingly many countries bet firmly for electric mobility. India is a clear example: its government has already made a plan which consists of electrifying all the motor vehicles of the country in 2032. If this task fulfils, petrol stations will disappear and electric stations will settle. The government of this country feels the need to carry out this project in order to cut down the high levels of pollution in its big cities such as Bombai or New Delhi.

Finally, one must say that climate change is continuously influencing the traditional patterns of this changing world, which are vanishing. New materials, new industries, technology, new relations between countries and new models of life will substitute the previous ones and a new society will slowly emerge.
