SCIENTIFIC WEEKEND AT THE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY MUSEUM IN ALCOBENDAS

24 volunteer pupils 9, 10 and 11 years old from Blas de Otero school have taken turns in groups of 8 or 9 and during 3 days they have been doing experiments related to our Erasmus + project in the Scientific Weekend held at the Science and Technology Museum in Alcobendas (Madrid). It has been much better than we imagined because there were many schools, secondary schools and even Universities.

WE'VE DONE A GREAT JOB DECORATING OUR STAND

At first we were a bit shy because it was our first time in an event of such a characteristic, but little by little we have been taking confidence in ourselves and have conducted the experiments as experts.

     DOING EXPERIMENTS FOR THE VISITORS

It has been a non-stop, with a great attendance of visitors of all ages  to our stand.

We have been announcing in the megaphone the experiments that we were doing and the visitors have been fascinated with the spontaneity and naturalness with which we have explained the concepts and steps to follow for the development of the different experiments.

    ALL THE PARTICIPANTS

    CEIP Blas de Otero

It has been a great experience to give us the opportunity to share with other people what we have learnt in the science lessons we have become more autonomous and selfconfident thanks to it.

SCIENTIFIC WEEKEND AT THE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY MUSEUM IN ALCOBENDAS

We have been selected together other 39  national projects to participate in the scientific weekend to be held at the Museum of Science and Technology in Alcobendas (Madrid) on the 11th, 12th and 13th of May. A representation of students of 4th, 5th and 6th grade of Blas de Otero school will carry out experiments related to our project Erasmus+ Science through experiment in Europe for the visitors. In the next entry we will tell you more.

SCIENCE FAIR AT BLAS DE OTERO SCHOOL

This week we have been very busy with the Science Fair related to our Erasmus+ project at Blas de Otero school.

34 volunteer students from 4th, 5th and 6th grades have become scientific experts and have shown us  how to do experiments related to magnetism, electricity, water, air, space and colour, during the Science Festival held at the School.

All the pupils from 1st to 6th grades have participated in this inter-level activity where pupils from different ages carried out experiments together.

It has been a very motivating experience for all of them and they have enjoyed learning from each other.

AIR, LIGHT  AND COLOUR EXPERIMENT: MELTING ICE

5th grade students have observed how dark colours absorb more heat than light colours, that is why we usually wear  light coloured clothes in summer. Now think and tell me which do you think will melt first the ice wrapped in white paper or in brown paper? Formulate your hypothesis and see if you are correct! That is what the scientific method is about!

AIR, LIGHT  AND COLOUR EXPERIMENT: LIGHT AND PRIMARY COLOURS

Students from grade 3 wanted to know what colours do you get when you mix primary colours and they have decided to mix primary colors using the light of a lantern and colored papers. It has been a fantastic way of mixing colours!

AIR, LIGHT  AND COLOUR EXPERIMENT: WEATHER VANE

The 4th graders have made a Weather vane, it is an object that is usually placed on the roofs to see the direction in which the wind blows, it is easier to observe in the villages, but in Madrid  we have seen two so far. Our students had great fun making weather vanes.

AIR, LIGHT  AND COLOUR EXPERIMENT: COLOURING MILK

1st and 2nd grade have done an experiment about surface tension.

Milk is mostly water but it also contains fats. When you add the colour dyes, they float because they are less dense than the milk. When the soap goes into action, the dyes begin to run all over the dish mixing and twisting and creating a sensational effect.

Two things have happened; the first is that the soap breaks the surface tension of the milk and the colors are thrown away from the soap. The second is that soap has a mission to fulfill, which is to trap fats. This causes the milk to move creating currents in which the dyes are trapped. When the soap catches all the fat, the movement ceases.

SPACE AND ASTRONOMY EXPERIMENT: SOLAR DESALINATOR STATION

3rd grade wanted to know how can we get salt from sea water. Salt is a very important mineral for our body. Did you know that in Ancient times it was is as a coin to buy different products. Our star, the Sun, has helped our students to do this experiment.

SPACE AND ASTRONOMY EXPERIMENT: BAKING SODA AND VINEGAR ROCKET

6th grade has made a mini rocket we don't think it will get to the Moon, but it can reach a few meters high when you launch it. Here are some photos! Enjoy the blast off!

SPACE AND ASRONOMY EXPERIMENT: CREATING A NEBULA

This month we have made experiments about Space and Astronomy. 1st and 2nd grades have created a Nebula. First of all we found out on the internet what a Nebula is. They look like fluffy cotton clouds so we used some materials such as cotton, a glass jar, paint disolved in water, glitter and a wooden stick to push the cotton. Aren't they beautiful?

SPACE AND ASTRONOMY: E-TWINING ERATOSTHENES PROJECT

Here students from 5th and 4th grades have measured the shadow of a gnomon of 1 metre at midday when the sun is higher in the sky to calculate the circunference of the planet Earth.

SPACE AND ASRONOMY ACTIVITY: SOLAR SYSTEM WITH PLAY DOUGH

We have taken advantage of the topic of astronomy that we are investigating in Science to make our own solar system with play dough. These are our fantastic creations! We hope you enjoy as much as we did making them!

SPACE AND ASRONOMY ACTIVITY: EATING THE SOLAR SYSTEM

This term in Science we have found out about our solar system and we have made a project consisting of comparing the size of each plante using fruits and labelling them. After that we ate all the planets! Yummy they were delicious!

OTHER LIVING THINGS EXPERIMENT: GROWING BEANS IN DIFFERENT CONDITIONS

We wanted to know how different contiditions affect plant growing. So we planted beans in the light and dark, in hot and cold temperature and in soil and nothing. We watered our seeds and took notes in our chart. Students from grade 1 and 2 did the experiment.

We labeled the pots and planted and watered the seeds

Soil and nothings only the seed in soil grew

Hot and cold only the seed in warm temperature grew

Light and dark only the seed in the light grew greener than the one in the dark

OTHER LIVING THINGS EXPERIMENT: GROWING BEANS RACE

We wanted to know if all the seeds grow at the same speed. So we planted beans from our partners countries and observed how fast did they grow.

These are the photos of the experiment

We planted the seeds the 17th of May after 5 days the roots began to grow, after 8 days the leaves appeared. Poland's seed grew faster than the other ones, Slovenia's followed it and Spain's seed was the third one.

Result: We can conclude that different seeds grow at different speed, not all the seeds grow at the same pace.
