A.1-TM5 / lesson observation 1

  • Lesson 1, 40 minutes

Historical perspective on technology - Difference to technology in traffic now and 100 years ago

Watch two movies about traffic and safety 100 years ago and what it looks like now. Allow the children to write down at least three things that have been technically developed on their whiteboard. In groups of 3-4 students, they will then tell each other. Go through the word artefact (Latin. Ars = art, facere = make, make) The word is used for all things made by people. The children are also given the task of watching women and men in traffic. Who is the bus ?, who drive the cars? Who are in the streets?. Here it may be appropriate to discuss the beliefs we have about men and women, whether male or female. These representations are not given but differ between cultures, periods of time and people's age. In the films it is clear what is the norm 100 years ago, 60 years ago and now.

The movie: Gatsmart: Cross the street for 13 minutes at SLI
The movie: The Cinema (1913) from Filmarkivet.se, about 3 minutes
The movie: Gävle - 1957 city movie, a 5-minute piece of this movie showing the traffic about 5 minutes into the movie

    Lesson 2 60 minutes

Finding technology and safety outdoors: Go for a walk around the school where there is a lot of traffic. The students are in groups of 3-4 people and each group has an iPad. Their task is to identify and shoot between 5-10 artifacts, as well as having technology development and gender in mind.

    Lesson 3 60 minutes

In their groups, students can choose an artifact as they describe function, development historically and appearance with. Is it gender neutral? They will then provide suggestions for improvement. The groups choose the way they want to report, build / construct, sketch, describe with words

    Lesson 4 60 minutes

Presentation of the artifacts with technical history and rehearsal and proposition to make it better and safer.
