    Evangelia Fotaki-Maria Gerou/Primary School of Perdikkas (5th grade)/Greece

    On the 10th of January Mathilda arrived at our school. That day we cut vasilopita (a sweet cake served in Greece on New Year's Day).The lucky coin went to an eleventh year old boy, who is supposed to have luck and health according to our tradition. Mathilda tasted the cake and left. The students wished her and all the people health, peace and relief of coronovirus.

    Primary shcool "Ivan Milutinovic" Subotica,Serbia

    The girl Matilda decided to visit the school "Ivan Milutinovic" in Subotica and class 2.a and find out how the figurines are made of dough and put on Christmas Eve. She was very surprised when her friends from Subotica showed her how to do it.

    In Romania, Mathilda also visited the students from the Gymnasium School "Horea, Closca and Crisan", from Turda. There she met the students of the 3rd grade A, who received her with great pleasure. Together they participated in Christmas celebration.

    Matylda also visited Polish integration schools in Bydgoszcz. She happened to be on a class Christmas Eve and learned about this tradition.

    Matilda finally came to Trebnje. She met new friends from class 5.b there. They showed her the town and told her what they like doing. They talked about their wishes for the year 2022. They want all to be healthy and to finally start traveling again.

    On the 11th January , Mathilda arrived at Ecole School in Asturias, Spain.
    Ecole students were excited to see her and they invited Mathilda to play in the playground and to have lunch at school. Mathilda loved polvorones, turrón and mazapán, the typical spanish desserts in this season. After lunch Mathilda and Ecole students were surprised to see some presents that The Three Wise Men left at school for them.
    Mathilda opened her present and she saw some souvenirs from Asturias that she took home.

    After visiting Slovenia, Matilda decided to return to Spain again.
    When she arrived in Madrid on January 18th, the second-grade students from the “Cortes de Cádiz” school had returned from Christmas vacation and were all putting away the Christmas decorations and the Nativity scene. That day they had an excursion to the Prado Museum, so Matilda accompanied them. She loved it! The students from Madrid had enjoyed the project so much that they gave Matilda a Menina's costume, like the painting by Diego de Velázquez. She put it on immediately. They wished her the best for 2022 and asked her to thank the children and teachers of "Christmas in Europe", for all this time together and for everything they have taught them.

    Comprehensive school "St. Patriarch Evtimiy" Plovdiv, Bulgaria

    When Matilda arrived in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, she saw the tradition of casting out evil spirits from the past year. It dates back to pagan times and today is an exciting event for children in Bulgaria. Before New Year's Eve, children prepare (with the help of their parents) survachka, which is a twig decorated with all kinds of colored threads, dried fruits, dried peppers and popcorn.

    In Romania, Matilda also arrived at the Gymnazium School Nr.1, in a small village, Concești in Botoșani county, to the students of the Preparatory Class. On Christmas Eve, they enjoyed the Nativity by presenting their first celebration of school life. Matilda gladly joined the little actors.
    Then he enjoyed the magic of winter that spread over the village. The beauty of the snow delighted everyone from children to grandparents. Matilda sledged.

    Băltescu Florina, Școala Gimnazială Vedea, Teleorman, România

    For the New Year, Mathilda stopped in Romania and visited the 3rd grade students from Vedea High School, Teleorman, to find out how they celebrate the New Year. He discovered that on New Year's Eve or the next morning, children go with Sorcova, which is a branch sprouted from a tree or a sorcova made from a stick around which colored paper flowers were woven.
    Inclined several times in the direction of a certain person, Sorcova is a kind of magic wand, which has the ability to transmit vigor and youth to the person concerned who rewards children with money to do well all year round.
    As a gift, they also offered her a sorcovă made by them.

    Escola Básica de Santa Cruz Trindade | Class 4A | Chaves - Portugal

    Portugal was Mathilda’s next stop. The children of a school in Chaves were looking forward to her arrival. They decided to welcome her with a table full of delicious Christmas food such as: king cake (bolo rei), Portuguese rice pudding (arroz doce), angel hair pasta (aletria), golden slices (rabanadas) and fried doughnuts filled with sugar and cinnamon (sonhos).
    Mathilda’s eyes were shining, and she couldn’t resist tasting the delicious specialities.

    Because Wyszków town is placed near Warsaw city Mathilda decided to visit children from 355 Primary School. She talked with them about New Year’s Dreams and expectations. Children prepared some pictures of their wishes and gifted Mathilda which she took for the next step.

    3rd Primary School of Prosotsani, Drama, Macedonia, Greece - Class D

    Matilda arrived in our school after the Christmas holidays were over and found the pupils of the 4th grade having a lesson. She said: “Come on, children! Let’s have some fun!” So we played all together and in the end we gave her a present to take to her country. It was a Christmas boat symbolising Greek people’s love for the sea and the voyage to a new life after Jesus’ birth. She said goodbye and continued her trip to visit other countries.

    Mathilda was just about to leave Poland. But she was still curious about the Polish New Year traditions. She decided to visit her friends from Wyszków. When she was walking through the city she saw something familiar - the Three Wise Men Parade. She saw it in Spain but had never taken part in it, so the children invited her to play out the Three Wise Men visit to infant Jesus. She was proud because she had one of the main roles in the play - she was Saint Mary!

    Osnovna škola Blatine-Škrape, Croatia (Split), Tea Vujević

    On New Year Mathilda came to Split, Croatia. Her friends from Primary school Blatine - Škrape welcomed her to their homes. They had lunch and sang holiday songs together. Mathilda had a great time. She wished her friends health and happiness and she invited them to her home country.
