Palena is a small town, in the middle of Italy, in the province of Chieti, in the Abruzzo region. It is at the foot of Majella mountain, in the heart of the Majella park, at 770 metres, a mountain village. There is a small river, the Aventino river.
The country has about 1300 inhabitants, but it has an ancient history.
In our town there is an ancient castle, with a tall clock tower; in the castle there is an important museum, the “Geopaleontogic museum”, where you can see like the “Prolagus”, a very small animals, a little mouse, lived many years ago. There is the “Bear museum” too and a special wildlife area.
Near the castle there is a theatre, and many churches; there is also a Celestinian hermitage.
Palena is also called "The country of orchids" because in its territory there are about 60 species of these beautiful plants.
