National myth of Greece- Dragon Lakes of Epirus

  • The human civilization is closely related to the aquatic element and in many places the lakes are associated with the darkest myths and legends. There, greedy beasts used to hide in their waters. 

    In Greece there are many examples of such lakes. Away the safety and the lights of cities, the Pindos mountains are the best environment for stories and legends to be born and spread such as the Dragon Lakes of Epirus. The most widely-known are the Tymphe Dragon Lake, the Mt. Smolikas Dragon Lake and the Gistova Dragon Lake. 

    Regarding the Dragon Lakes of Tymphe and Smolikas, the myth says that the lakes were the home of the two rival dragons. Every time they were angry, they threw stones each other. In this way the Lakes were formed. In the case of Gistova Dragon Lake, the legend says that a good dragon created the lake with his tears following his exile from the nearby village of Grammos.
