This is a video about my hometown Tartu. Tartu´s welcome sentence is: "City of Good Thoughts". Tartu, with its population of 100,000 in an area of 38.8 square kilometres, is the second largest city of Estonia. Tartu, lying 185 kilometres south of Tallinn, is also the centre of Southern Estonia. The Emajõgi River, which connects the two largest lakes of Estonia, flows for the length of 10 kilometres within the city limits and adds colour to the city. The first written records of Tartu date from 1030.

CHRISTMAS IN CANADA: What does it look like?

Christmas in Canada is actually difficult to explain because our country is made of a people and families from all around the world. Most people who celebrate Christmas in Canada set up an decorate a Christmas tree, hang stockings and have Santa deliver a gift to them on Christmas Eve.

Your religion will dictate how you celebrate the holidays. My children go to a Christian school and they celebrate the birth of Jesus. The school I teach at has students that celebrate the birth of Jesus, Hanukkah, only Santa and those who do not celebrate Christmas.

When the area of Canada that I live in was settled by immigrants in the late 1800s, each town was often a group from the same country. So you would see a Ukrainian town, a Scottish town, an English town, and a German town. Celebrations from town to town would vary based on their traditions.

My family is from Scotland/England/Sweden. We would go to church Christmas eve, open presents in the morning and have a large turkey meal on Christmas day. My husband's family is from Ukraine/Romania so they would do two Christmas'. They would celebrate in a similar way on December 25 but they would also celebrate Orthodox Christmas. We celebrate again tonight with 12 meatless dishes (most do not continue the traditions anymore) this evening.

The picture below is of Christmas food that my husband's family had. Kolache is always there to eat! Raclette is not a traditional to prepare food for Christmas but we wanted to try something different this year. It is hard to go wrong with meat, cheese and crackers!

Christmas in Canada is wonderful because you can make it what you want it to be!
    HAPPY NEW YEAR!

There was   the Advent Party  in our kindergarten  . Kids and their parents  remembered Lithuanian traditions before  Christmas Eve  and made the Christmas wreath.

On November the 11, every year, Canada observes Remembrance Day. Remembrance day is used to say 'thank you' for those who gave their lives in service to their country and renewing our commitment to peace. School will do a ceremony on the 10 of November. Services of remembrance are held at 1100 at cenotaphs and at 1111, two minutes of silence is observed. The majority of provinces and territories in Canada have this day as a holiday. For the first 11 days of November, many Canadians wear a poppy pin on the left side of their clothing and jackets as a sign of remembrance. At the conclusion of the Remembrance Day Ceremony, each person will lay their poppy at the cenotaph or at the garve stone of a military member.

In November we celebrate All Saints Day and All Souls' Day. At the cemetery in Runowo there are many old graves. There are some graves which people can't look after because all family's members died ! So we decided to do it and light candles for the dead. Our kids feel helpful !

    Happy Hallowe'en from Canada!

Many students, families and school celebrate Hallowe'en by dressing up in costume. Pumpkins are carved and decorated at home and at school. On October 31 children dress up and in the evening go door to door in their neighbourhoods Trick-or-Treating and receive candy.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

Today ( the 13th of October) is the day of thanksgiving in Canada. It is a nation holiday (almost everyone has the day off of work) where family and friends come together to be thankful for what they have been given. Many families cook a large (often 8-10 kg) turkey and have a dish of potatoes, root vegetables, corn, stuffing (a bread dish), salads and there is always a pumpkin dessert. The most common dessert is pumpkin pie with vanilla ice cream or whip cream. Many families eat the same meal for days after because there is so much food!

Here is the Canadian Thanksgiving turkey! It is covered in butter, spices and bacon.

Yesterday  ( the 7th of October)

we commemorate today's Independence Day (8th October). It is a day when Croatia decided to become an independent state and to get out of the former Yugoslavia. Our class has made a tie (which have invented Croats) and had painted in the recognizable red and white squares
