The Forest Month
Forests in danger because of Deforestation (Greek students/ work)
The initiator of Tree Day was American Julius Sterling Morton, US secretary of agriculture, governor of Nebraska, expert and nature lover. In 1872, while living in Nebraska City, he appealed to his fellow countrymen to plant a tree on April 10. He argued that "other holidays serve only as a reminder, and the day of the tree indicates the future". His idea met with wide response and over one million trees were planted in the US that day. And so, since then, every year, on the second Sunday of April, Arbor Day is celebrated in the USA.
Morton's idea came to Europe in 1951. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization has decided that World Tree Day will be celebrated each year in all member countries.
Nowadays, we replace more and more green areas with concrete constructions, parking lots and squares. It is not only the landscape that is losing it, but also man, because we interact with nature less and less, and we increasingly live in polluted cities. We forget that trees are a natural protective barrier against dust, garbage or noise.
In Poland, we celebrate the Tree Day on October 10. This is ancampaign, as part of this holiday the tree planting campaign is underway. It is accompanied by an ecological education program aimed at increasing ecological awareness in society.
