    Ezra & John

The story written by Rikard Polić, Marko Ivošević and Martino Milanović, Gimnazija Bernardina Frankopana, Ogulin - CROATIA

Ezra and John knew each other since they were little kids. They went through elementary, middle school and high school together. In high school they were friends but their love grew each day they spend with each other. They eventually started dating. They went on to have two kids. John was working as photographer and Ezra was a teacher. One day the Department of national security called John! He had to go to war. When he told his family, they were devastated.

--No dad, please don't go!-begged John's little daughter Erna with tears going down her cheecks

Then, John kneeled so as to face Erna right through her tiny green eyes.

-Sorry honey, but I really need to go. Our country needs me.

-Will you come back?- asked his other kid Trev, a 14-year-old boy.

Their father rose to his feet and gave them both a kiss in the forehead.

-Of course I will. Don't worry, it will be a quick war. In a few months I will be back.

He gave his wife a longer kiss and left through the front door.

As the days passed, the family sticked to John's promise, waiting eagerly for his return.

However, the news revealed the war wasn’t ending anytime soon, so the tension in their country began to rise.

There were bombings in the cities nearby causing chaos, hatred and fear in their town. As the  prices of provisions were getting higher and higher each day, the robberies started. First, the only targets were the supermarkets, but soon they got empty and the targets were individuals.

So, one day Ezra gathered her children and told them that their house wasn’t safe anymore. They packed food, clothes and money and left their home. Ezra was not sure where she was heading to, but one thing she knew: she had to find her husband.

Stronger than ever, Ezra conducted her kids to another town. They went on walking for miles and miles. They never stopped for more than a day in a place, and tried not to draw the attention to themselves for precaution. The family had become nomadic. Until one day, when they were trading, a merchant informed them that the battle field where John was fighting was completely destroyed and that there were no survivors.

Ezra and her kids were completely horrified.

-What now? What are we going to do without dad? He promised he would come back to us!- The children screamed.

Ezra stayed quiet for a few seconds and found enough strength in herself to say to her kids:

-Erna, Trev. You know I love both of you and I want what is best for you. Now that your father is dead, I have to tell you that there is nothing for us here.

She took both her children by their hand and brought them to another country where they would live in peace.
