Imagine you are a 15-year-old boy/girl living in the Middle Ages where Christianity was quite a strong influence. What would your daily life look like? Which chores would you have to perform? Which leisure activities might be open to you? Which factors might influence the life you lead? Can you find similarities and/or differences to your ways of life?

Everyday life in the Middle Ages
In the Middle Ages, the majority of the population was subordinated to a small upper class. Ordinary people had to fight for their lives all the time and every winter was a great challenge. Meanwhile, the aristocracy could sit back and celebrate rushing celebrations. But common people also enjoyed celebrating, if circumstances allowed. With the blossoming of the handicraft, numerous professions developed from the High Middle Ages and prosperity spread more and more. All in all, however, one can say that life was very hard, which was also reflected in a very high mortality rate.
Free time
Like so much else, of course, the amount of free time available depended heavily on social rank. The same goes for the leisure activities that were then pursued. For example, it was popular to be entertained by jugglers at fairs. Dice games or board games (such as chess) were also popular. Of course, children didn't have the choice of toys like today, but they also had a great time with their hobbyhorses or a metal ring which they drove with a stick.
The life of people in the Middle Ages was influenced by religion in all areas of life. Christian values were propagated to guide life. These included above all godliness, humility and charity. In normal life praying and saying grace were an important part of daily routine. People regularly visited church and followed the rules of the Bible very strictly.
Comparison to today
• Today everyone goes to school also the poor ones
• Christianity isn’t as important today as it was in the Middle Age
• There are much more leisure activities and games even for the poorer people than earlier
• People now are a lot healthier and there are far less diseases than in the past
