BEBRAS/CASTOR Contest

  • Bebras is an international initiative aiming to promote Informatics (Computer Science, or Computing) and computational thinking among school students at all ages. Participants are usually supervised by teachers who may integrate the Bebraschallenge in their teaching activities. The challenge is performed at schools using computers or mobile devices.

Computational thinking involves using a set of problem-solving skills and techniques that software engineers use to write programs and apps. The Bebras challenge promotes problem solving skills and Informatics concepts including the ability to break down complex tasks into simpler components, algorithm design, pattern recognition, pattern generalisation and abstraction. More about computational thinking.

Partners from Poland, Lithuania, Serbia and Greece had participated in their National Bebras contests.

This is a "sharing" practice case as the Greek school has paricipated in the contest that was held for the first time in Greece after the info provided by the other schools that already had experience of the contest the previous years. In early November, there was a call from the Poland teacher to remind the contest, Lithuania and Serbia confirmed their participation and the Greek school had tested the international platform  and in February that was organised for the first time in Greece (Bebras.gr) they were registered and participated.

    Report of the Greek participation:

Testing in December the Lithuanian site for Bebras (the Greek Bebras contest was not announced yet):

Italian participation in BEBRAS (report is here)

In Tunisia there is the CASTOR contest which takes place in Africa in November  and the Tunisian partner schools had partcipated:

    In Kaunas Versvu gymnasium/Lithuania:

    And for srudents:

The Bebras Computing Challenge introduces computational thinking to students. It is organised in 50 countries and designed to get students all over the world excited. Previous Bebras tasks you can find in many countries’ websites as the Bebras brochures https://www.bebras.org/?q=documents

Some previous challenges are available to try without registering or logging in. It depends on language do you know.
