Dissemination in Greece
Five students of the Music School of Komotini along with 6 students from Sweden , 4 from Turkey as well as 6 teachers ( two from each partner country) visited Trivento, Italy from 15th-21st April 2018. The meeting’s major focus was the enhancement of students’ knowledge of ICT tools and of applications involved in the learning process of Mathematics.
Teaching was exclusively undertaken by Italian students, who had been specifically trained for the task and was in keeping with the Greek paradigm at the transnational meeting in Komotini in February 2018.
Foreign students, who were put up by families of students involved in the project ,attended classes at the Istituto Omnicomprensivo N. Scarano of Trivento while in the afternoons they participated in cultural events (visits to museums, sightseeing etc), with a view to enhancing their knowledge of the local history and culture.
On 15th April the students of the Music School of Komotini arrived in Rome. Having caught an early flight, they had the chance to go on a tour of the city’s historical centre and visit the Coliseum, the Capitol, Piazza di Spagna, Fontana di Trevi, Piazza di Popolo and villa Borghese. Late at night, they arrived in Trivento, where they were welcomed by the host families.
On Monday 16th April, all participants along with the mayor and bishop of Trivento as well as representatives of other local authorities attended the welcome ceremony. The event was also open to the general public. The ceremony featured a brief display of traditional dances and an assortment of local cuisine dishes.
After the ceremony, both students and teachers engaged in activities which had been prepped by teachers of the high school. Ice-breaking activities to foster bonding , followed by a tour of the high school of Trivento. In the afternoon, foreign students and teachers were shown around the major landmarks of Trivento (local castle and cathedral).
On the following mornings, students attended presentations featuring infinity, Koch’s snowflake, Chaos theory and pi value computation. Afterwards, they engaged in pi digits’ memory games, watched a video on applied Mathematics, were given an insight into Google Charts and Google Sheets and they also engaged in collaborative activities and solved Math quizzes.
Teachers on the other hand were shown around the local Primary school and Senior high school. They were welcomed by the students of the aforementioned schools who presented them with gifts and displayed their projects which had been prepared for the occasion. Students of Trivento’s Senior high school assumed the journalist’s role and interviewed all foreign teachers. The interviews were included in articles of the school newspaper which featured the Erasmus+ project.
As was mentioned above, after morning workshops and lunch breaks there were visits to a major archaeological site or neighboring city. So, students visited Campobasso, the capital of the province of Molise, Vasto and Naples. In Campobasso ( 17/4/2018) they went on a tour of the archaeological museum and learnt about the history of the Samnites, who inhabited the area during the Roman era.
In Vasto ( 18/4/2018) they had the opportunity to wander around the coastal, protected nature reserve of the region. (Punta Aderci, Punta Penna).
On 19th April all project participants went on a day trip to Naples, where they visited the Capo di Monte national museum. Afterwards, they strolled around the city’s historical centre ( Piazza del Plebiscito, Maschio Angioino) and tried the local cuisine at nearby taverns.
On the last day ( Friday 20th April) students prepared presentations about their stay in Trivento , described their impressions on the project’s padlet, filled out questionnaires to collect data on the host country and upon receiving their farewell gifts they had lunch along with the rest of the students. Teachers filled out questionnaires to collect data on the host country, evaluated the transnational meeting in Italy and planned the next meeting in Turkey. In the afternoon they visited the neighboring city of Agnone, where they had the chance to go on a guided tour of the local museum and one of the oldest traditional bell manufacturing foundries in Italy. The tour was followed by a farewell dinner at a local hotel, hosted by the mayor of Trivento.
After midnight, the Greek team left for Rome by bus, and on the following morning ( 21st April) caught a flight to Thessaloniki, where they arrived at around 10.20’ a.m. The team reached Komotini in the afternoon.
The impact of the visit to Italy will be long-running and the benefits for all the students of the Music school of Komotini who were involved in the project will be manifold. They got an insight into the lifestyle, mentality and culture of the host country. They had the opportunity to have a first-hand experience of a different school environment and a different educational system. They enhanced their command of the English language-which was the common language of communication- by using it in an authentic, daily-life setting. Last but not least, students took part in Maths workshops and enhanced their skills as they were introduced to various ICT tools which turned them into autonomous and empowered learners.
The current Erasmus+ project will run until the end of the next school year, during which two more meetings will be held. The major focus of the next meeting which will be held in Izmir, Turkey (November 25th 2018) and the 2nd meeting will be held in Gothenburg, Sweden (March 2018). The final transnational meeting will be held in Izmir, Turkey at the end of the school’s year and it will be about the evaluation of the project.
