CLIL

  • USING THE CLIL APPROACH

    A brief history

Over the last 10 years the CLIL (Content language integrated learning) approach

has been used throughout all of Europe to enhance second language learning.

Sometimes the second language is not English but in many cases it is. The CLIL

approach enhances English language learning! Educators use the approach in

various subjects! As part of our project we have used this approach to enhance

English via Maths, Music, Physical Education and Science!

    Work process - Maths

    1. Students thought about what survey question they would like to ask their classmates, teachers, parents, family members or friends.

    2. The teacher helped the students correct their questions and assisted them in expressing themselves.

    3. The students asked their classmates, other teachers, their family and their friends their survey questions.

    4. They collected the data in their exercise books.

    5. They created graphs/charts and wrote explanations based on what they asked and learnt.

    6. They presented their findings to the rest of their class!

    Work process - Physical Education

    1. Mr Christos Kassianos of Dasoupolis primary school (KB) thought of 2 games that students like playing.

    2. The instructions for both games were found in Greek and translated to English.

    3. The instructions were first read out to the students of Dasoupolis primary school (KB) and then 2 short videos were prepared explaining the game.

    4. The students of Dasoupolis primary school (KB) played the games with all the instructions being given in English.

    5. Once the students had played the games, 2 new videos were created using Microsoft's movie maker that showed the explanations and the games being played.

    6. The students from the other schools listened to the videos, heard the instructions and then played the games. Like before all the instructions were given in English!

    Work process - Music

    1. During an English lesson the students listened to the wheel of musical impressions on the Jimmy Fallon show. The guest was Alicia Keys!

    2. The students listened to Alicia sing the alphabet song but to the music of Adele's song Hello.

    3. After being inspired by Alicia the students were given the task of transforming their own songs. During their music lessons they took Adele's hello and changed it to a song about our project. They also learnt how to play the song using their musical instruments.

    4. They also took Ed Sheeran's shape of you and wrote a song about books. They also learnt how to play the song using musical instruments.

    5. During their English lessons the students' lyrics were corrected.

    6. Even though only Shape of you and Hello were fully transformed from start to end, other songs were also changed. However, only parts of the following songs were changed!
