We are a group of 30 students in grade 9th and 10th. We follow a Program to Improve Learning and Performance (PMAR in Spanish, Programa de Mejora del Aprendizaje y del Rendimiento).
This is part of the actions that Spain is taking in order to reduce the rates of early school leaving, according to the Europe 2020 targets.
Our education program is officially altered from what would normally be. For example, we study Fields of Knowledge instead of subjects. Is more or less the same but one field of knowledge involve two or more subjects.
We maintain an Organic Garden in our High School. In our Organic Garden we plant spring and winter vegetables and also we maintain a Mediterranean Garden to promote Sustainable Development.
Our Organic Garden supports the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals: Goal 3, Goal 4, Goal 5, Goal 11, Goal 12, Goal 13, Goal 15.
The Goals will stimulate action over the next 15 years in areas of critical importance for humanity and the planet.
Besides, we visit Alaquàs’ Urban Gardens with regularity to compare its evolution with our School Garden. Urban Gardens support the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals, 3 “Good health and Well-being”, 11 “Sustainable cities and communities”, 13 “Climate action” and 15 “Life on land”, protecting and promoting sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems and halt of biodiversity loss.
In addition, we are interested in the benefits of urban trees, reducing our carbon footprint and reforestation of burned forests. In our garden we have a tree nursery to recover atmospheric CO2 and fight against the greenhouse effect and on the occasion of Arbor Day in Alaquàs (31 January) we will replant trees in an area burned by wildfire. Arbor Day is a holiday in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees. In Spain each municipality decides the date for its Arbor Day, usually between February and May.
Have you got Urban Gardens and Urban Trees in you city or in your High School?. We want to see and compare them with ours so it would be a pleasure if you send us pictures and comments.
You can see the evolution of our garden from September to June in our IES Clara Campoamor’s Organic Garden blog:
