Fighting stereotypes

  • Stereotypes often prevent you to go beyond superficial considerations. How could you open the minds and go beyond?

    DISCOVERING NEW CULTURES

    Workshop: Black and white

We all tend to think in stereotypes when it comes to nationalities and countries we are not familiar with - in other words we often think in black and white images and forget about all the colours that lie in between these two. The workshop aimed at showing stereotypical images and used the colours black and white as examples for it: Students were first guided to come up with their connotations for the word "white" that they wrote or drew on big white papers during a guided creative writing process. As expected the students mainly came up with positive and inspiring words for the word "white", black however got associated with mainly negative and depressing images. In a second step the students created poems and calligraphic pictures out of their random word groups, presented them and discussed this experience of thinking in black and white in mixed groups of Finnish and Austrian students.

    The Black Box Revelation

During the project week in Tielt (Belgium) the students of the involved countries had to present themselves with an IDENTITY CAPSULE. Tis is a kind of (digital) storage box filled with documents and objects. They "tell" who you are and how you think the other might be.

Every country will create two boxes. The first one contains information about Belgium, the second about the visiting country.

During the first day of the exchange, the "black boxes" are opend and reveal the content to one another in an interactive way.

    WHEN NEEDS MAKE YOU SPECIAL

    Workshop: Downside up

We all have ideas about people with the Down-syndrom. Starting from the movie "Downside-up" we worked to avoid the stereotypes.

    A scientifical point of view

We did several science-workshops about DNA (extraction and making a helix), heridity, genes, ... And we even measured the thickness of our hair with laserlight.

Here you find the documents about these workshops:
