Discovering what we share

  • We are all different, but are we aware of what we share? There are different ways to explore what we have in common, as human beings or as part of the same community.

    THE BIOLOGICAL APPROACH

Workshop on body language : are your moves while you are speaking culturally determined? are there stereotypes considering body language and communication?

Workshop on facial expressions : discover the universal facial expression and how they are used in cartoons for example

Facial expressions are universal. Do you know how many common facial expressions human beings share and which they are? How are these facial expressions used to communicate worldwhile?

    THE HISTORICAL APPROACH

Large periods of our history have involved populations of numerous countries in major or global events. Exploring these events is an opportunity to work on remembrance of a shared experience and become aware of what can lead to cultural differences in considering recent events. It's a way to better understanding!

    DIVIDED BY CONFLICT

To search for similarities and differences between conflicts in your own country through different subjects.Investigate sensitive issues and similarities from the past and learn more about the history of your country and the other country involved.

What's in a name, why is one person an migrant, another an asylum seeker or maybe a refugee? Is the current refugee-crisis unique in history? How do we act in Europe to solve the refugee-problems?
Europahuis Ryckevelde has a workshop about this theme.

Ancient Greece: gods, humans, ...: borders and boundaries

We are humans. And as humans we are constantly motivated to push our boundaries to make our world a better one and to have a life full of comfort. From the moment we started to live in societies, we created borders to mark our land, to indicate what is allowed and what is forbidden, what is within the possibilities of mankind, and what belongs to the jurisdiction or control of the gods in antiquity, replaced by the jurisdiction of the law and ethical commissions today.

Some students made a kind of performance about this topic:

     THE LINGUISTIC APPROACH

We think we can't understand people because we don't speak their language. But is it so difficult to step into someone else's mother tongue? what is common to our mother tongue and the unknown language?

    TAKE A LANGUAGE BATH!

Two countries with different language groups who live in specific parts of their countries and have different traditions. The borders between the language groups can be very evident and stereotypes about each other exist. The students will compare the situation in the two countries through different subjects.
