Literacy : The books we use to work on the city

  •

Share with your partners the books you use in class to work on the topic : my town, my city.

But What is a town or a city for our little ones ?

At Maternelle Capsus, we'll use these books to introduce the topic :

Iggy Peck architect is about creating buildings with imagination. Archicube is about drawing buildings with geometric forms ( from 2D to 3D) and Pop ville is a pop up book so more focused on 3D...

Today, we listened to "Iggy Peck the Architect. We didn't know what an architect is. Now we know this is the man or woman that creates buildings ! (Maternelle Capsus)

At Maternelle Capsus today, we had a look at "Popville". We say "had a look" because there is no text on the pages except at the end of the book. We loved this book as it shows us how it starts to build a city from the very beginning and how the landscape around can change by the way.

Today, we listened to Madlenka. In this book in English a little girl called Madlenka who lives in a big city, wants to tell everyone that she's just lost her tooth and she 's grown up. Listening to this story, we discovered that Big cities are often multicultural ! May be like Munchen with its thaï restaurant ?

For this topic, we worked on the following books.

Bear Goes to Town was perfect for introducing the different places you can find in a town.  I took my large teddy to school and the children could imagine him walking around in their hometown.  They all agreed that the park would be his favourite place.

We also read 'The Smartest Giant in town' which is all about a Giant who goes around in his town helping others.  The children think we would make a very good neighbour although some were afraid that he might accidently squash their homes.

Here is the book we use in Turkey :

In Munich, we read this book to work on the city.
