  • HOW WE WORKED THE STORY "GO AWAY BIG GREEN MONSTER"

    (PRE-SCHOOL 5 YEARS OLD A)

As we know, working through literacy engages children in conversation about language and instills values. Working with "Go away big green monster" has given our students the opportunity to review and learn vocabulary related to colours and parts of the body. Besides, they have learnt that there's no reason to fear "monsters" that don't exist and saying "go away" will make them dissapear. This is how we have worked this tale:

Introduction of the tale: We talked about the feeling of fear raising some questions such as what we are afraid of, when we are scared and hw we feel in those situations. After that, we learnt that there is no point in having those fears. All we have to do to say good bye to those fears is saying out loud "go away!".

Story telling: we went to the carpet, sat down on it and listened to the teacher's reading of the tale. But previously the pupils had to discover what they thought the story was about by just looking at the cover.

Watching the video: after the reading we all went back to our places and watched the story video on the whiteboard.

Table time: The pupils made their own masks and all we became monters for a while.

If you want to see a summary of everything we did, we invite you to watch the video below!

Working this tale was grate fun!

    (PRE-SCHOOL 5 YEARS OLD B)

We started talking about the feeling of fear, what we were afraid of, how we felt when we were scared, how we knew we were scared... And after that, we tried to find a way to say goodbye to fear, that was saying "go away". We all said out loud " go away". After this, we were shown the cover of a very colourful glossy book and tried to anticipate what it was about and what was going to happen in the story just by its cover...

Then, we went to a carpet, sat down on the floor and listened to the story told by our teacher, participating and repeating the parts of the face. We also said " go away" each time the sentence was said in the story, doing gestures at the same time.

After this story telling, we all went back to our groups and watched the story video on the whiteboard. It was amazing and scaaary! We all loved it! We also watched the video of the song "Go away big green monster" and sang it altogether and in groups, each group singing a piece of the whole song. It was really fun!

Then, we played a game on the whiteboard about making up the face of the big green monster... Each one of us had to put a part of the face on the monster to complete the whole green monster face... And then, we also took them off saying "go away!".

It was great fun to see how it looked like!

After that game, we made our own monster masks... First, we traced the monster face, coloured it with the same colours and finally cut them out to make a mask so we could look as scary as the monster on Halloween Day!

We enjoyed making them a lot, even we were singing the song while colouring...

And finally, we were taken some pictures to show how our masks looked like.

We all enjoyed a very scary, "big green monstery" happy Halloween and learnt how to deal with fear whenever we had that feeling again.

And snip, snap, snout, this tale´s told out.
