ROMAN VILLA RUSTICA IN MOGORJELO - OUTSIDE OUR TOWN

Mogorjelo is a unique archeological relic from the roman era, a well preserved roman villa rustica, located just outside Čapljina in southern Bosnia and Hercegovina. According to a sign found in Taslovčići honoring Octavian’s conquest of Sicily in 36 B.C., Italics colonised this area. This was most intense in early 1st century A.D. when the colonists from Narona built an agricultural estate to supply that town. There were a lot of settlements like this around Narona but the villa rustica in Višići (dating from the 2nd century) is the only well-researched one.

Archaeologist Carl Patsch believed that Mogorjelo was a roman fortress, one in a series of roman forts between the rivers Krka and Neretva, although later research never really confirmed his hypothesis. With its strong walls, towers and layout Mogorjelo looked like a base camp, a castrum . Its location at the estuary of the river Trebižat into the river Neretva goes in favour of its camp-looking aesthetics, as it could serve to defend from a potential attack on Narona. Other scientists suppose that Mogorjelo was a big fortified private property, a villa rustica or palatium, which is unquestionable after a renovation following a destruction by the Goths.
