Tapada Nacional de Mafra

  • On the track of biodiversity

On 24th October 2016, fifty Portuguese students went on a quest: to explore the biodiversity of Tapada Nacional de Mafra. There they were provided with background information about the history of Tapada Nacional de Mafra (National Hunting Grounds of Mafra), as well as its flora and fauna, explored the concept of biodiversity (What is it? Where can I find it? Should I preserve it? Why?), made lab experiments related to microorganisms and analysed plants’ DNA. They also had a guided tour around Tapada de Mafra during which, in groups of 13/14, they carried out an activity which consisted of identifying different kinds of lichens. Finally, they watched a video about biodiversity to consolidate the knowledge they had learnt. Now they are definitely more prone to assume their responsibilities as far as the protection of biodiversity is concerned.
