PRESENTATIONS - ITALY
GEOGRAPHY Italy is the 4th most populous EU member state (61 million inhabitants). It is a parliamentary republic, and our President is Sergio Mattarella. Our flag is green, white and red. Italy is a peninsula situated in the Mediterranean Sea and shares borders with France, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, San Marino and Vatican City. Due to its shape, our country is often referred to as lo Stivale (the Boot). It is divided into 20 regions and Emilia Romagna, which is in the north-west of Italy, is the region we come from.
Fiorenzuola d’Arda, our home town, has a population of about 15,000; its symbol is a blue shield with three roses on top. Our town is situated in in the rich and fertile Po valley; it is about 100 km south of Milan, and not far from Bologna and Parma. Its name derives from Florentia, which means "prosperous" in Latin; "d'Arda" refers to the River Arda, which flows from the Apennines into the valley where Fiorenzuola is situated. The landscape around Fiorenzuola varies from the mountainous and hilly areas of the Apennines to the fertile plains of the Po river.
ECONOMY Important sectors of the local economy are agriculture and activities linked with the transformation of agricultural products. The main cereal crops are wheat, corn, and sugar beets. Other common products are sunflowers, forages, and tomatoes. Hills are covered by vineyards which produce several types of wines which are of controlled origin or DOC. Some important wines are Gutturnio, Ortrugo, Barbera and Bonarda. Farming includes dairy cattle for milk and cheese (Grana Padano is world-famous), beef cattle and pigs. Pork meat is used to make local products such as Coppa, Pancetta, and Salame. All of these products are used to prepare some local dishes like
- Chisolini; they are squares of flour, water and salt which are fried in hot lard;
- Another traditional dish is Anolini, which are similar to Ravioli. The main ingredients are flour, Grana Padano, nutmeg and grated bread. Anolini are cooked in a beef, capon and pork broth;
- Tortelli alle erbette, which are diamonds of dough containing a stuff of spinach and Grana Padano.
- Pisarei e Faso, which are small dumplings with baked beans and tomato sauce.
The manufacturing sector is characterised by small and medium sized companies which are particularly active in the mechanical field with points of excellence in robotics and industrial automation. Many companies deal with oil drilling and well equipment. Most people in our area are employed in the tertiary sector especially banks, hospitals, insurance companies, museums, theatres, schools, and public administration.
CULTURE Fiorenzuola is a lively and friendly place, where people are keen on preserving their historical and cultural traditions:
- our town is along the original trail of the Via Francigena, the road from Canterbury to Rome, and the tomb of Saint Peter. “Via Francigena” means “the road from the land of the Franks”; over the centuries it was used by merchants, kings and queens, bishops and pilgrims as they travelled south to Rome and it became one of the most important European communication routes in the Middle Ages.
- Fiorenzuola is also famous for an ancient Carnival festival, a street show whose name is Zobia. The name of this celebration derives from the Latin “iovia”, giovedì (Thursday, therefore Shrove Thursday). The celebration involves all the inhabitants of the town, who go along the streets dressed up with unusual costumes and make up. One of the rules of Zobia is the exclusive use, of simple, easy to find material to dress up such as old clothes, used accessories, rags... People don’t hide their faces behind masks and don't wear smart clothes: the real protagonists of the event are creativity, mimics, grimaces. There are jokes and imitations of the other villagers, and everybody makes fun of their own and other peoples’ faults.
- just a few kilometres far from our town tourists can also visit the land where the famous composer Giuseppe Verdi grew up, lived and wrote most of his operas. Here you can see the photos of the house where he was born and the villa where he lived.
- finally we have a really important international track cycling competition (la Sei Giorni delle Rose) and several music and theatre events that take place in our town every year.
OUR SCHOOL Istituto Statale d’Istruzione Superiore “E. Mattei” is a secondary school for students aged 14-19. Our school is named after Enrico Mattei, an Italian public administrator who was responsible for the creation of ENI, the largest oil company in Italy.
It provides five different courses of study:
- Liceo Scientifico is a high school for Scientific Studies. The main subjects are Maths, Physics, Biology and Chemistry.
- Liceo delle Scienze Umane is a high school for Socio-Pedagogical Studies.
- A vocational school – Industrial Maintenance Services and Technical Assistance
- A technical high school which specialises in Mechanical Engineering, Mechathronics and Energy/Electronics and Electrical Engineering
- A technical high school which specialises in Administration, Finance and Marketing. This is the school we attend. The main subjects in our school are Business studies and Law. We learn Business English and French too.
There are more than 800 students and over 120 teachers in our school. School starts in September and ends at the beginning of June. We have two breaks: two weeks in winter (Christmas holidays) and one week in Spring (Easter holidays). Summer holidays start in the second week of June and end at the beginning of September. The school year is divided into two terms; from September to December and from January to June. We have lessons only in the morning, from 7:50 to 12:20 or 13:15 and we go to school on Saturdays. In the afternoon we can attend additional courses such as sports, foreign languages and drama. Starting from the 3rd year we have work placements: 3 weeks in Year 3, 4 weeks in Year 4 and 2 weeks in the last year. Work placements take place in both public and private institutions such as town councils, hospitals, libraries, retailers, manufacturing companies, service companies, insurance companies, accountants and lawyers. After passing a final state examination at the end of Year 5, we can either look for a job or go to university.
OUR OFFICIAL SCHOOL ANTHEM! We have some traditional music or dance in our area, just a few songs which are no longer popular. However, our school has got its own anthem, which was composed by one of our teachers, Mr Morandini, and performed by our school band, Banda Mattei. The title of the song is “Vado a scuola” (I go to school). The musicians and actors are students, teachers and our head teacher too. The beginning of the video is set in an imaginary gloomy future: technology has prevailed over human beings, old schools have closed down and students are only taught order, silence and conformism; you will see they all have hoods to hide their faces, they all move and behave in the same way; so freedom is a forbidden word. One day, while secretly rummaging in the basement of the school, some undercover rebels find an unusual object, a videotape. There is an old TV set too, so they turn it on and watch it. The video had been recorded by former students more than 30 years before, when school was still a free place, where students could still think for themselves. The song speaks about school life, the life we experience every day. Positive as well as negatives aspects! Going to school is sometimes really demanding: you get up every single day and feel sleepy, you’ve got bags under your eyes and the bus is packed … or you have forgotten some books at home, and even if you’re not prepared, your ignorance will be tested without any mercy. … At 10.20 you experience the first mental block of the day, and the break is too short, just the time to find some comfort at the school coffee bar, a croissant or a sandwich and it’s time to start again… Yes, it’s a BEASTLY EFFORT … Luckily, time flies and it’s the last day of school; now everybody can celebrate and relax, have fun and enjoy life. Well ... AFTER ALL … school is not that bad … and we must all confess that we’re already looking forward to starting again in September. So even if we always complain about it, we enjoy school too. The chorus of this song is: “Vado a scuola, vado a scuola, ci sto bene detto in una parola” which means “I go to school and I really feel well there”.
