DESENZANO - THE ROMAN VILLA
The villa of Desenzano is one of the most remarkable late Roman villae in northern Italy, strategically located just north of the Via Gallica, the Roman road which connected Bergomum, Brixia and Verona, along the southern shore of Garda Lake.
Built at the end of the 1st century B.C., the building originally faced directly the lake. The remains which are still visible today date mostly back to the first half of the 4th century A.D. and covered a surface of about 11,000 square meters.
VERONA - ARENA
The most solemn monument in Roman Verona, it was built in the 1st century A.D. with various tiers of seats and, in the centre, an arena for gladiator shows, struggles with wild beasts and other events.
Its elliptical shape produces perfect acoustics from any standpoint and allows to accommodate a large number of spectators. Today it is internationally famous for the large-scale opera performances given there. In ancient times, the arena's capacity was nearly 30,000 people.
VERONA - PIAZZA DELLE ERBE
Piazza delle Erbe, the ancient Roman forum of Verona in the exact center of the city, is a lively meeting place for locals and visitors alike, an enchanting setting to stop for an aperitif and a chat with friends.
Verona's ancient forum has always been a place of trade. In the Middle Ages, the main merchandise were spices and vegetables, hence the current name of Piazza delle Erbe. In recent decades, large supermarkets and tourism have changed the appearance of the stalls: today only two or three stalls sell fruit and vegetables, surrounded by souvenirs of all kinds.
VERONA - QUID SHOP
Progetto Quid combines Upcycling, passion for beauty and social awarenes. It is an ethical and sustainable fashion brand that creates limited-edition collections of clothes and accessories.
Quid recovers otherwise wasted high-quality textiles from prestigious fashion brands. These fabrics are regenerated into beautiful collections and manufactured by people — mostly women — with vulnerable pasts, who find in Quid a new beginning.
LAKE GARDA - EXCURSION
The hills of Valtenesi (with heights ranging from 100 to 250 meters a.s.l.) are located along the southern shore of Lake Garda. They are part of a large moraine, originating from the rock debris carried by the extended Garda glacier two million years ago.
The territory is characterized by wooded areas, rolling hills alternate with plateaus, lakes and springs, vineyards and olive groves. Some wetlands are of considerable ecological importance for the preservation of flora and fauna and the maintenance of the ecological balance of the area.
SIRMIONE - GROTTOES of CATULLUS
At the tip of the Sirmione peninsula, in a fantastic panoramic location, stand the remains of the largest and most well-preserved Roman villa in northern Italy, known as Grottoes of Catullus.
The reference to Catullus, a Latin poet from Verona who died in 54 BC, can be explained by the fact that in Carme XXXI Catullus celebrated Sirmione as a jewel among all the islands and the peninsulas of seas and lakes.
