IES CARDENAL PARDO DE TAVERA

  •

IES Cardenal Pardo de Tavera is a High School located in the town of Toro, in the province of Zamora, as part of Castilla y León region. The school receives students not only from Toro, but also from surrounding villages, and the students' ages is from 12 to 18.

Our students belong to different social contexts, in which the most important ones are the industries of wine, cheese and sweets. Most families in this town earn their living through any of these three businesses. There is a great connection between our school and students families, which in most cases facilitates the development of learning an teaching processes, especially in these difficult times.

Apart from this, our school is deeply committed to the development and implementation of all SDO, in different ways. Every year a new project dealing with environment is done, and the topics to work are really varied as well: our students have been working on different matters such as water consumption, recycling and use of plastic, energy-saving policies.... the aim of all these projects is to raise an awareness in our students of the need to behave according to the rules which have been established to preserve and care for what surrounds us.

At the same time, together with the development of these projects, our school has also being helping our community in the same way as we do with our students. That means that both the school, students and families are given the oppotyunity to work together to fulfill the objectives and aims proposed in the projects dealing with Sutainable Development Goals so that everyone in town and surrounding places know the problems we have and the way to solve them, especially considering nature and climate. In this sense, Service Learning is also one of our most important and defining features.

Our motivation to take part in the project

This project seems to be the perfect oppotunity to share experiences about the way we behave towards climate and environment. We are looking forward to meeting students and teachers from the other countries to see and consider if what we are doing in our town towards the preservation of nature and environment is being carried out in the appropriate way.

Besides, keeping in touch with other people using English to communicate improves our students competences (oral and written) in English and helps them break the ice in relation to establishing new relationships out of the school atmosphere.

As we are closely related to people working in local businesses, we would like to see how other business work in other countries and compare them with the idea of improving and fostering new ideas towards the preservation of nature and environment.
