Osnovna škola Mertojak is a primary school in Split, Croatia's second largest city, located on the Adriatic Sea. 655 students aged 6/7 to 14 attend the school, and around 80 teachers and 8 administrative workers are employed.
The programmes that the school covers are statutory and are defined by the national curriculum. In year 1-4 students are taught by one teacher per class (with the exception of English), while in years 5-8 they are taught by a number of teachers, i.e. one teacher per subject. The compulsory subjects during the last four years of primary education include Croatian, English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Technical Education, Physical Education, Information and Communication
Technology, Music and Art. Additionally, our school offers a number of elective subjects students can choose, such as Italian, German, French, Religion and ICT.
Local tradition is something the majority of students are already introduced as early as in the first grade. Each year our students dance traditional dances and perform on the school stage in a variety of ways. A number of various extracurricular activities at our school resulted in the founding of the students’ cooperative that is focused on creating different products, some of which include traditional jewelry, soap and olive oil made from olives from the school garden. Other than fostering the students’ entrepreneurial spirit, our school is also focused on the STEM approach.
Our city dates back to the 4th century AD, when a settlement started to grow around the walls of an ancient Roman palace. Today, Split is a popular tourist destination. You can find out more about our beautiful city here:
Welcome to Split!
The primary motivation to join this project arises from the need to share our own cultural heritage and to learn about other cultures through project work.
