October 2021
In October, we began looking at some of the ecological things we already have in school. These include the planting of new plants and trees, rain water collectors, a low waste canteen, etc. The students were then asked what other problems they could identify.
We found that there were a number of problems that our new Green Bison group could work on. These included: A problem with litter in the playing areas, a lack of recycling bins in the outdoor areas, no wehere to place Tetrapaks inside the school, the use of plastic cups in the school coffee machine, and a lack of tacher and student understanding in what can and cannot be recycled. The students were then divided into groups and were asked to choose one of these problems and prepare presentations on how we could solve these problems.
As part of this work we also added our ecological school projects to a Padlet in collaboration with our greenify partner schools for the Erasmus days.
November 2021
The Green Bison Eco School Idea Presentations were presented to the headmaster of the school. After a number of presentations, his notebook was full of ideas to help greenify our school.
One presentation identified the problem of a lack of recycling bins around our school. As there were no recycling bins, students would put recyclable items into the normal bins where they likely would end up in landfill. The students’ solution was to install new recycling bins at different places around the school. Here are a few pictures of the problem.
December 2021
Through December, we continued lessons on environmental issues around the school and thought of innovative ways to greenify our school.
January 2022
In January, we started lessons on how we can make our lives greener, through reducing our carbon footprint at home and in the local environment.
February 2022
In February we started thinking about the positive impact that green places can have on our environment.
In preparation for the Kassel meeting the students prepared a presentation about some of the environmental issues we have here in Snina.
March 2022
In March, as inspired by our student presentations to the headmaster, new sets of recycling bins were installed around the school.
In preparation for the Kassel meeting the students prepared a presentation of our school, including the new recycling bins of course.
In March, three teachers and five students represented the Slovak delegation travelling to Kassel. The theme for the meeting was the importance and protection of nature. In keeping with the project theme, we travelled to Germany by train, stopping off for a short stop in Berlin before continuing on to Kassel. The journey was not without its problems, as the night train we travelled on had a problem and there was no heating or electricity. This was a little too ‘eco’ for us so we had to use an alternative train. The meeting in Kassel was wonderful, and we learnt a lot of new things and also planted over 200 trees in the process, along with a fruit tree which we had brought from Slovakia.
April 2022
First Greenifi notice boards displayed in school.
In preparation for the Herzele meeting, the students prepared a presentation of our school, showing some of the ecological things we already have in school. This included the rain collectors, the recycling bins, the green areas and the new now notice boards.
May 2022
Meeting in Herzele.
In lessons, we looked at some of the international problems regarding ecology, an overuse of materials, and the increasing problem of microplastics.
June 2022
In June, we are concluding our year’s work, including completing Kahoot quizzes to test our knowledge, adding to our greenify notice boards, and implementing some more of the students ecological ideas around school.
