Archanes village
Archanes is 14 km from the capital Heraklion and only 7 km from the Knossos Palace. It’s one of the most picturesque settlements of Crete. The area boasts a particular natural environment: gorges, mountains, olive groves, vineyards, rare flora and fauna. The exemplary restoration of the rural town gave the settlement the European Award for Village Reformation. Local archaeological sites reveal that there has been continuous habitation in the area for 5000 years.
Τhe village is built at the foot of the anthropomorphic mountain Juchta, with altitude of 811 m. According to tradition, the god Zeus was buried there.
Fourni forest
Fourni is a green hill in Kato Archanes, about 12 km south of Heraklion. The artificial forest that exists there, is an ideal destination if you like nature. There are even tables and a small playground. It is worth visiting for walking, cycling or just for a picnic. Just beyond the forest, there is a stone theater. During the summer months there are concerts in it, theatrical etc. The view of Archanes from there is amazing.
A rich cemetery was discovered on Fourni hill, which is one of the most important archeological sites in Crete. Many of the findings are on display at the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion and the Archaeological Museum of Archanes.
