Fairy Tale Therapy

  • FAIRYTALE THERAPY TEACHINGS IN BUCHAREST

Throughout the 6–10th of September, the participants of the ERASMUS+ (KA229) Project Special Education Students Overcome Obstacles gathered for their first meeting in Romania. The participants were invited to the Special Secondary School for Visually Impaired Students to attend the teachings during which the employees of the aforementioned institutions applied Art Therapy within the educational programme for their pupils. During the teachings, the participants found out how Art Therapy can help a person having visual impairment and got familiarised with various teaching methods that were experienced first-hand by the participants. Said experiences will be presented and experienced together with their pupils once the participants return to their schools.

Fairytales are loved by both children and adults. This was the reasoning for selecting the aforementioned literature genre for the achievement of the goals set out by the therapy teachings. The aim of the Fairytale Therapy is to reduce the aggression within children, help them shake their anxiety and fears, develop their emotional self-control, as well as nurture positive relationships towards other people. A story told to a child at the right time has the same strong impact as physiological counselling for an adult. The only difference is that the child is not required to draw up their conclusions out lout right there and now. Having read or listened to a fairytale, the child is allowed to be left with their thoughts.

Colleagues from Romania showed how to find the therapeutic characteristics of the following fairytales and sayings: Pinocchio, Alice in Wonderland, I Love You More Than Salt, as well as presented the peculiarities of mask, music and even climbing therapies.

By reading fairytales, children become aware of the unpleasant truth that no person can escape the looming fights with major obstacles in life. This is the way of life; however, they also realise that if they will not back down and will face the distresses awaiting for them with courage and resilience, they will be able to overcome any obstacle awaiting them. Climbing a vertical wall is not an easy task. This is twice as hard for a person with visual impairment. By climbing to the top, the child may feel as if they have overcame one of the major obstacles in life. And that is how - step by step - the pupils of the Special Secondary School for Visually Impaired Students overcome obstacles and achieve unbelievable victories. Just to name a few: dance contest, national TV series X Factor winners, as well as medallists at the European and World Paralympics.

During the meeting, it was made quite clear that art therapy can help make the impossible possible!
