EU-MOUNTAIN-HACK
Milan 26-29 November 2019
Accelerating Sustainability Transitions
Background
Mountains cover nearly 27 per cent of the Earth’s land mass and play a crucial role in sustainable economic growth. International Mountain Day is celebrated on 11 December and was established by the United Nations in 2002, in occasion of the International Year of Mountains, which was held in 2003. The celebration aims to increase awareness on the importance of mountains for the health of the planet and well-being of billions of people.
Moreover, mountain glaciers are the sentinels of climate change.
According to the theme chosen for 2017, the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research launched the first youth Hackathon on the most pressing national issues related to mountains, taking place in Milan on December 2017 at the University of Milan headquarter (Video-Link: https://bit.ly/2JdsWCx). Its objective was to promote and support concrete and long-lasting initiatives in favour of mountain populations and their territories. After that educational experience, the Mountain Hack competition involved over 200 students in four different Italian cities and other 100 from 5 nepalese schools in Kathmandu and Pokhara (Nepal) in 2018.
