C2 - teaching and learning with mini projects

  • This page lists the activities presented by the project teams at the C2 meeting in Italy, whose topic was teaching and learning with the use of a mini project

Each team presented at least 2 activities, one in the Maths and Science category and one in Art and Humanities category.

    SCIENCE and MATHS

SPAIN:  A GLOSSARY ON SCIENTIFIC WORDS FROM GREEK ORIGIN TO BE GATHERED IN VARIOUS LANGUAGES: GREEK, ENGLISH, FRENCH AND SPANISH IWHERE THE DEFINITIONS, PICTURES AND PRONUNCIATIONS ARE INCLUDED.

ITALY: FROM FOOD TO WELLNESS...THROUGH OUR DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
It is necessary to know in order to prevent. The aim of this project is to know how our digestive system works to learn how to eat  better and to prevent diseases and obesity. To do this we have observed what happens in every human organ of our digestive system ( mouth, esophagus, stomach, pancreas, gallbladder, liver, intestines) when we ingest the food. For this project our students used Genially, a tool for creating interactive contents.

    GREECE:

    ROMANIA: THE ROMANIAN TRADITIONAL VILLAGE

The visit to Italy, which was hosted by  ISTITUTO COMPRENSIVO “PERRI-PITAGORA” in Lamezia Terme, was a lesson on culture in itself. Our students had the opportunity to put to test all they had learnt about Italian music and painting during their schooling years, and they made the best of it.

In this perfect artistic environment, the Romanian team disseminated one of our yearly projects called “Art for all” which is spearheaded by the “George Apostu” Association for Art and Education. The project is meant to increase the general public’s interest in quality art, to provide access to artistic expression to children from rural areas and to promote cooperation through art.

As for the science department, the teachers and students alike proposed a more comprehensive project which involved geography, Math, and physics. Thus, during a visit in a museum, students discovered geometric shapes and their meaning in Romanian traditional pottery and costumes, whereas in a farmer’s traditional household, they could notice the magic of physics: mechanical energy, kinetic and potential energy, the centripetal force, all at work in real life. As for geography, it provided the background and it helped students understand how villages and people’s lifestyle are influenced by different types of relief.

    PORTUGAL:

Science Project- Construction of a model with the Sun, Earth and Moon.

So we are presenting the DAC models. DAC is a type of work that combines several subjects together to create a final result to show students that knowledge is not stored in compartments with no practical use but , on the opposite, everything is related and used together.

This project covered the subjects of Maths, Physics and Chemistry, Geography and Art. Students had to apply the knowledge learnt in Maths and Physics and build a scaled model representing the 3 luminary and the distance between them.

On Planet Earth, students represented the continents and the oceans and, when placing it in position on the model, students should consider the planet inclination concerning the orbit plan.

To create the model they needed to resort to physical books to find out the diameter of the moon, earth and sun, the distance between them and the physiognomy of each one. Then they had to resort to calculations to be able to reproduce them on the model. To achieve the desired 3d effect, they used materials such as recycled materials, styrofoam, cardboards, newspapers, modeling paste, glue, scissors, wire, brushes, sponges, glitter….The building materials were selected by using the knowledge acquired in Arts.

POLAND: A presentation on ITALY with a quiz

The  team explained a procedure to prepare a presentation, treating the task as a mini project. It was a geography class on Italy. The team used the activity to actually teach their class some facts on Italy.

    ART and HUMANITIES

SPAIN: "RADIO HISTORY" A THEATRICAL SCENE OF THE DIFFERENT STATES IN MEDIEVAL TIMES RECORDED AS A RADIO PROGRAMME

ITALY: KIDS' GUERNICA : ART FOR PEACE

This project gave our students the opportunities to express their ideas on peace. After having studied the famous Picasso's painting "Guernica" they have realised a painting of the same size as Guernica where they have given powerful messages of peace through their creativity and fantasy.

Arts Project - Recycled Fashion Show

The students presented a Prezi describing the project they conducted in Art classes. This project consisted of a Recycled Fashion Show where students reused several materials in a creative way.

The Prezi presented showed several images of the different phases of the project: research of materials, drafts and execution of costumes and decorations.

Our students  started by presenting the five topics throughout the work and they are: Contents, Art and Design, Fashion and Recycling, the show and Evaluation. The first slide is about art and design where our classmates explained about the open day which is usually the last day of classes in which the students at our school present the work they have made throughout the year to the community, our parents, our brothers and other family members who come to the school to socialize, watch music dance shows and of course they also come to eat the food that the students have prepared. Next,  our colleagues presented the methodology of the project, describing the steps of research, selection of materials and execution of clothes with recycled products.

Then we make a selection of songs, an advertising poster is created and the texts are prepared for the show presenters.

Then on the open day our 9th grade colleagues star in the parade catwalk  and are evaluated by the jury . At the end there will be an award for the winning clothes.

To complete this project in classroom context, the teacher formed working groups that were dedicated to the creation and execution of ornamental features for the place where the parade would take place as well as the selection and usage of songs and the creation of advertisements publishing the event.

This project developed students' critical and creative thinking, fostered interpersonal relationships, group work spirit and increased aesthetic sensitivity, technical and technological knowledge.

The final project comprised the Fashion Show where the students themselves paraded with the costumes and accessories they created and performed in class, based on their creativity and reinforcing the importance of recycling.
