    Description:

The project meeting on Crete took place in the term from 13 October to 19 October 2019. On Monday, all participants met in the 2nd Vocational High School of Heraklion. They were welcomed with Greek music and dance, after that, students worked in international teams, got to know each other during ice-breaking activities, quizzes and experienced a virtual tour of Heraklion. The real visit to a natural museum followed in the afternoon.

The topic of this meeting was cultural literacy, as a result on Tuesday a visit to the island of Spinangola was realised. On this island, there was a leprosarium and in the years from 1903 to 1957, patients with leprosy from the whole Europe were violently placed here. Excursion to this place enabled to learn about the life of sick people in bad conditions without running water. Spinangola is trying to become a UNESCO site and a discussion about these sites was a part of this visit.

On Wednesday students worked in international teams again to explore the capital of Heraklion, each team followed the same instruction in different order and visited the main cultural highlights - Metropolitan Church of Ayios Minas (an orthodox temple full of wonderful icons), the city centre, town hall, the harbour and Venetian Fortress Rocca a Mare. Each team created a short video about their exploring. These videos were later presented to others. In the afternoon, the participants visited the Chamber of Commerce and learnt interesting information about economy and tourism on Crete. Students who are interested in working on this touristic island in the branch of hotel management can apply for a job on the following address: info@chm.gr. If the applicants are fluent in English, Russian and German, they will be employed immediately.

On Thursday, another cultural excursion was organised. Rethimno is a historic town with narrow streets, full of souvenirs and tourists. The participants had the chance to admire a local mosque, nice graffiti, last but not least, the students visited the Museum of Modern Art. In this museum there are many exhibits presenting contemporary arts and artists as well as interesting information panels reflecting the history of Crete and eventful moments, which happened here in the past.

Excursion to Knossos on Friday closed cultural exploring and enabled to gain information about the largest archeologic site on Cerete. The remains of Minoan culture date back to 1900 BC. Later the evaluation of this meeting was realised in the partner school. Students presented work on the project in their home countries including power-point presentations, kahoot quizzes, videos and action bound quizzes about visited cultural places in France, Greece, Germany and the Czech Republic. A workshop called Culture iceberg closed the evaluation. This activity dealt with concepts of culture. How many cultures do we belong to and what makes the difference between them? Students explored these questions by means of the “iceberg-concept” of culture. The whole meeting was rich in cultural stimuli and full of nice activities enabling good cooperation and communication.
